What is the necessity for the continuous introduction of oxygen into the body, while food is introduced only at intervals? How are the red corpuscles able to take up and give off oxygen? How is the plasma able to take up and give off carbon dioxide?
Simply because the quantity of phosphate of lime in solution in the plasma was not sufficient to supply the waste of bone tissue in all parts of the body, and at the same time furnish a supply for the provisional callus which is thrown out in the repair of fractures.
This enables all parts of the body to keep at about the same temperature. In addition to serving as a carrier, the blood has antiseptic properties, i.e., it destroys disease germs. While this function is mainly due to the white corpuscles, it is due in part to the plasma. Through its coagulation, the blood also closes leaks in the small blood vessels.
As the blood flows along the capillaries, certain parts of the plasma of the blood filter through their walls into the lymph, and certain parts of the lymph filter through the cell walls of the tissues and mingle with the blood current. The lymph thus acts as a medium of exchange, in which a transfer of material takes place between the blood in the capillaries and the lymph around them.
Very learnedly then from William's lips fell the new vocabulary that had come to him with his latest treasures: chrysoprase, carnelian, girasol, onyx, plasma, sardonyx, lapis lazuli, tourmaline, chrysolite, hyacinth, and carbuncle. "They are lovely, perfectly lovely!" breathed Billy, when the last chain had slipped through her fingers into William's hand.
She got up to greet him, holding out two large bottles. "Infant plasma straight from Southport. And if you think I had it easy lying my way in and out of the hospital, you're a fool, Dan Feldman. If the man who took my place there hadn't been a native idiot, I never would have gotten away with it." The things he had suspected could still be right, he realized.
The virus of syphilis exerts a special influence upon the Blood Vessels, exciting a proliferation of the endothelial lining which results in narrowing of their lumen, endarteritis, and a perivascular infiltration in the form of accumulations of plasma cells around the vessels and in the lymphatics that accompany them.
And he even denies to them the poor right to originate or in any way modify their own plasma. He says: "They are no more the producers of vital phenomena, than the shells scattered in orderly line along the sea-beach are the instruments by which the gravitative force of the moon acts upon the ocean. Like these, the cells mark only where the vital tides have been, and how they have acted."
In fact, as it was made of a plasma that allowed everything through except lone particles, it was so uninhibiting that a moment after I had put mine on I had completely forgotten about it. The only other part of the suit that stood out at all was the long, metallic buckle that secured the belt, it having a bowie knife hidden within it in an unnoticeable and inconspicuous manner.
=Cadaveric Rigidity Rigor Mortis.= For some time after death the muscles continue to contract under stimuli. When this irritability ceases and it seldom exceeds two hours rigidity and hardening sets in, and in all cases precedes putrefaction. It is caused by the coagulation of the muscle plasma.
