Man that is in honor and abideth not, is like the beast that perisheth but there's Christian and Apollyon, right afore you, and better him than me. When I was a young one, and that wasn't yesterday, I used to think, but that was before I could read, that Apollyon was one and the same with Bonaparty Nappoleon, you know.

People say of such a figure, in almost feverish whispers, "He knows his own mind," which is exactly like saying in equally feverish whispers, "He blows his own nose." Human nature simply cannot subsist without a hope and aim of some kind; as the sanity of the Old Testament truly said, where there is no vision the people perisheth.

And Socrates met the end which he expected: death at the hands of his fellow-citizens. And here perhaps a little glimmer of light is thrown into one of the darkest corners of human experience. The wise old author of Ecclesiastes writes: "There is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness; and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.

There is a hope that perisheth, both it and he that hoped with it together. The reasons are, Because it floweth not from faith and experience, but rather from conceit and presumption. Hope, as I have told you, if it be right, cometh of faith, and is brought forth by experience: but the hope now under consideration is alone, and has no right original, and therefore not regarded.

For though the Right of a Soveraign Monarch cannot be extinguished by the act of another; yet the Obligation of the members may. But when the Power of an Assembly is once suppressed, the Right of the same perisheth utterly; because the Assembly it selfe is extinct; and consequently, there is no possibility for the Soveraignty to re-enter. The Procuration Of The Good Of The People

"On hearing these words, Bhima well-skilled in speech said, 'That king who is without exertion, or who being weak and without resources entereth into hostility with one that is strong, perisheth like an ant-hill.

True indeed it was that, while with multiplying years the animal life lessened in quantity and intensity, the spiritual life was enriched and deepened; or, to put it in Paul's language and in the historical present so favored by Carleton, "While the outward man perisheth, the inward man is renewed day by day."

"A cry of dread, a din, a thundering sound Of men and clashing harness roars around; Peoples 'gainst peoples furiously rage; Cities with cities deadly battle wage; Temples and towns one heap of ashes lie; Justice and equity fade out and die Unchecked the soldier's wicked will is done With human blood the outraged churches run; Bedridden Age, disbedded, perisheth, And over all grins the pale face of Death."

But I say unto you, O man, whosoever doeth this the same hath great cause to repent; and except he repenteth of that which he hath done he perisheth forever, and hath no interest in the kingdom of God. For behold, are we not all beggars?

The successful politician good or bad deals with the dynamics with the will, the hopes, the needs and the visions of men. It isn't sentimentality which says that where there is no vision the people perisheth.
