'To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna. We are all familiar with that picturesque incident of the conflict between Israel and Amalek, which ended in victory and the erection of this memorial trophy. Moses, as you remember, went up on the mount whilst Joshua and the men of war fought in the plain.

The pope followed his retreating figure with a glance of profound sadness. "I fear," thought he, "that Joseph is indeed irreclaimable." Here he raised his soft dark eyes to heaven, and continued in a low murmur, "For a time the Lord endureth with mildness, but His mighty overcometh the blasphemer, and he vanisheth: while holy church remaineth unchangeable forever!"

Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

He that overcometh shall inherit all things, and I will be to him a God, and he shall be to me a son.

Look well if there be any way of wickedness in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. 1 John v. 4, 5. Whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory which overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

To tell the name is to seal the success to say, "In thee also I am well pleased." But we are still in the region of symbol. For supposing that such a form were actually observed between God and him that overcometh, it would be no less a symbol only an acted one. We must therefore look deeper still for the fulness of its meaning.

In the great choruses the cadence is usually reached either by a pedal on the tonic, as in the chorus, "Awake, thou that sleepest," or by a pedal on the dominant culminating in a chord of the major ninth, as in the final chorus; or there is a plagal cadence, as in the first chorus of the second part; or, if the 6/4 chord is introduced, as it is in the chorus, "He that overcometh," its ordinary effect is covered and obscured by the movement of the divided sopranos.

But remember that you can not win unless you put your faith into your fighting. “This is the victory that overcometh the world, even your faith.” Believe that you will win. No matter how weak you are, no matter how great your foe, no matter what may confront you, go into the conflict with that courage that is born of faith. Believe that God will give you the victory. Do not consider defeat at all.

'This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith'; not only because our confidence in Jesus Christ is the blowing of the bugle that summons to warfare and shakes off the tyrant's yoke, but it is also the means by which we join ourselves to Him who has overcome, and make His victory ours.

Christ said, "Him that overcometh will I make a pillar of the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out" go out, that is, into incarnation into "time, besprent with seven-hued circumstance." Such are the testimonies of the world-saviors regarding the means and end of liberation.
