His master was Keats, and in his own words, he wrote "with the single intention of creating beauty." Austerity and objectivity were his ideals. Strangely enough, he was able to state in a new and more convincing way the doctrine of art for art's sake.

Her brilliant powers of analysis, the intellectual atmosphere with which she surrounds the more complex characters in her longer romances, are entirely put aside, and we are given instead a series of pictures and dialogues in what has been called the purely objective style; so pure in its objectivity and detachment that it would be hard for any one to decide from internal evidence that they were in reality her own composition.

"How can one," he says, "maintain of modern philosophy and of the modern period that they have accomplished freedom when it has not freed us from the power of objectivity? Or am I free from despots when I no longer fear a personal tyrant, but am afraid of every outrage upon the loyalty which I owe to him?" This is just the case in the modern period.

It must be stated that primarily we perceive things in themselves, not in us; the subjectivity of our current perception comes from our work of outlining it in the bosom of reality, but the root of pure perception plunges into full objectivity.

Johnson did not like people the fault was in them, not in him; a ruthless objectivity is part of the classic equipment. He failed, too, because he could neither understand nor appreciate poetry which concerned itself with the sensations that come from external nature. Nature was to him a closed book, very likely for a purely physical reason.

This was the nucleus of inheritance and breeding, which together with his temperament governs his art from within, even amid all its personal reserve and its objectivity.

One phase of existence, which had been hitherto a reality to me, melted away into the thinness of an uncompleted dream; but as it melted away, there appeared behind it a whole universe, of which I had never before dreamed. I had puzzled my brains over the metaphysics of subjectivity and objectivity and found only words; now I grasped and comprehended the round of the thing.

The attributes of reality, in our world of values, are Goodness, Truth, and Beauty. And we assert that we have as good reason to claim objective reality for these Ideas as for anything in the world revealed to our senses. 'All claims on man's behalf, says Professor Pringle-Pattison, 'must be based on the objectivity of the values revealed in his experience, and brokenly realised there.

Objectivity of duckling: expressed by position of duckling after kills Number: 6. Singularity of first subject of discourse: expressed by lack of plural suffix in farmer; and by suffix -s in following verb 7. Singularity of second subject of discourse: expressed by lack of plural suffix in duckling Time: 8. Present: expressed by lack of preterit suffix in verb; and by suffixed -s

It were a great mistake to regard Balzac as merely a writer who photographed things outside in the world; he is intensely interested in the things within and if objectivity meant realism exclusively, he would be no realist at all.
