Such a word was coined by the combination of the Latin miscere, to mix, and genus, race: from these, miscegenation a mingling of the races. The word is as euphonious as "amalgamation," and much more correct in meaning. It has passed into the language, and no future dictionary will be complete without it.

Charles King and others; and the next day it contained a terrific article, introducing miscegenation in the most violent and offensive manner, and saying that the ladies of the "Loyal League" had offered to marry the colored soldiers on their return! After that, the "Herald" kept up a regular fusillade against the supposed miscegenic proclivities of the Republicans.

Such we understand to be the doctrine of what styles itself Miscegenation. It would be pertinent, and, perhaps, conclusive, to cite on this point the Latin maxim, De gustibus non disputandum.

I would not, however, be taken to advocate the inter-breeding of white and black. Those who have witnessed the misery and suffering which the coloured people have to endure for being coloured will welcome any fair means of preventing miscegenation in South Africa.

Had the Southern States of America deported all the products of 'miscegenation, instead of keeping them in servitude, the 'patriarchal institution' might have lasted to this day instead of being prematurely abolished. My first visit to Leone showed me the root of all her evils. There is hardly a peasant in the peninsula.

The Latin custom of miscegenation proved to be a still more important factor in the education of Negroes in the colonies. As the French and Spanish came to America for the purpose of exploitation, leaving their wives behind, many of them, by cohabiting with and marrying colored women, gave rise to an element of mixed breeds. This was especially true of the Spanish settlements.

At the session of the Reichstag in 1913, when the question of the readmission of the Jesuits was raised, the Centrum party even sided with the Socialists in the matter of the expropriation law for Posen, in order to annoy the chancellor for his opposition to themselves. Such political miscegenation as this does not show a high level of faith or of policy.

So ferocious is this sentiment against intermarriage, that in a recent Missouri case, where a colored man ran away with and married a young white woman, the man was pursued by a "posse" a word which is rapidly being debased from its proper meaning by its use in the attempt to dignify the character of lawless Southern mobs and shot to death; the woman was tried and convicted of the "crime" of "miscegenation" another honest word which the South degrades along with the Negro.

In addition to the arts of the hoodoo and medicine man, she possessed unusual knowledge of the virtue of wild plants, including those of dangerous quality. There was never race or tribe so primitive as to be ignorant of deadly herbs. This scarcely half-civilized daughter of miscegenation was a Hecate in the skilful decoction of potent leaves, roots and berries.

"My dear girl, I never would tell him; for his sake as well as your own, you can rely on me." "I know you would never do it intentionally, ma'am, but I'm scared you'll do it without thinking; you talk of it so much, more than anything. The other night when you began to talk of the crime of miscegenation, I thought I should die." "That was very inconsiderate of me. Poor girl, I'll be more careful."
