The voice came again: Maxwelton Braes are bonny Where early fa's the dew, For 'twas there that Annie Laurie Gie me her promise true Mitchell threw out his arm impatiently. "I wish they wouldn't play and sing those old songs," he said. "They make you think of damned old things. I beg your pardon, Peter."
There was the Knight of the Green Valley, in green and gold, a green hat with a long white plume, lace ruffles at his sleeves, and buckles on dancing-pumps; a bonny fat knight of Maxwelton Braes, in Highland kilts and a plaid; and the Knight at Large. "He ought to be caged," murmured the Hon.
In the mist above the pool at the foot of the cascade a double rainbow gleamed brilliantly. O tane is the man, which the Tahitians call the real arch, and O vahine, the woman, the reflected bow. They appeared and disappeared with the movement of the tiny, fleecy clouds about the sun. The air, as dewy as early morn in the braes o' Maxwelton, was deliciously cool.
Fingland is in the parish of Dalry, in the adjacent shire of Kirkcudbright, and Douglas was a somewhat near neighbor of Annie. The present proprietor of Maxwelton House is Sir Emilius Laurie, formerly rector of St. John's, Paddington, when he was known as Sir Emilius Bayley. He took the name of Laurie when he succeeded to the family estates.
The three champions were Sir Robert Laurie of Maxwelton, Alexander Ferguson of Craigdarrock an eminent lawyer, and who must, I think, have been a grandson of Annie Laurie and Captain Riddell of Friar's Carse, antiquary and friend of Burns.
Most people suppose "Annie Laurie" to be a creation of the songwriter's fancy, or perhaps some Scotch peasant girl, like Highland Mary and most of the heroines of Robert Burns. In either case they are mistaken. Annie Laurie was "born in the purple," so to speak, at Maxwelton House, in the beautiful glen of the Cairn Glencairn.
The crowd was eager now and the Hon. Sam confident. On came the Knight at Large, his face a rainbow, his plume wilted and one red base-ball stocking slipped from its moorings two rings! On followed the fat Maxwelton, his plaid streaming and his kilts flapping about his fat legs also two rings! "Egad!" quoth the Hon. Sam.
Billy distributed the morning mail and hummed Maxwelton Braes. Then he arranged goods on the counter. Dic followed the little old fellow with his eyes, but neither spoke. The younger man was waiting for his friend to speak, and the friend was silent because he did not feel like talking. He loved Dic and Rita with passionate tenderness.
