After the battle of Carabobo, Venezuela was divided into three military districts, which were placed under the command respectively of Marino, Paez and Bermudez, who had also been promoted to the rank of general. In this way, Bolivar tried to satisfy the ambitions of his officers, who, in more than one respect, considered their conquests as private property. This was especially true of Paez.
"The Venetians," muttered Kenelm, "decapitated Marino Faliero for conspiring against his own order, the nobles. The Venetians loved their institutions, and had faith in them. Is there such love and such faith among the English?"
The Venetian ambassador at Rome, Marino Giorgi, whose feelings were quite the other way, took, in his diplomatic capacity, a malicious pleasure in disquieting him. "Holy father," said he, "the Most Christian King is there in person with the most warlike and best appointed of armies; the Swiss are afoot and ill armed, and I am doubtful of their gaining the day."
Bolivar and Marino retired once more to New Granada. Bolivar was made captain-general of the forces of New Granada, his title of Liberator was recognized, and another, that of Illustrious Pacificator, bestowed upon him. A second time he undertook the conquest of Venezuela from the west. Dissensions soon arose between Bolivar and the other leaders.
Cordova, tempted by ambition, and believing in the necessity for the separation of New Granada from Venezuela, claimed that, since Bolivar was getting old and had very few days to live, he should be deprived of the command. He tried to form a combination with Paez, Marino and others. Bolivar knew of his actions and talked to him in an attempt to win back his friendship.
In the army of Boves, composed of 4,000 llaneros, he helped to take the city of Calabozo. Bolivar immediately asked Marino, who was commanding in the East, to help him, but for several reasons, and perhaps mainly because Marino wanted to have supreme power, he did not go to the rescue. This was the sad state of affairs at the beginning of 1814.
Love must have lent its precious hearing too, for she vowed she loved to hear him speak her language. In the great Council Chamber of the Ducal Palace they looked at the seventy-six portraits of the illustrious succession of Doges with the one tragic vacant space, the missing portrait of Marino Faliero, the Rienzi of Venice, the man before his time.
He organized a system of military justice so as to avoid the arbitrariness of the military chieftains and, being aware that Piar had tried to foster the disloyalty of Marino, he endeavored to convince him of his folly, and said very plainly that unless these machinations were stopped, great evils must be expected.
For the study of the peperino mines, which contain a stone special to the Alban district, formed by the action of hot water on gray volcanic cinders, the reader should follow on foot the line of the new Albano railway, from the place called Il Sassone to the town of Marino.
Even on the day of the French king's entry, Marino Sanuto remarks that Louis was displeased to find how few of the people cried "France!" while the Venetians were greeted with shouts of "Dogs!" and hardly dared show themselves in the streets. "We have given the king his dinner," said a Milanese citizen; "you will be served up for his supper!"
