In Balliol, there sat a chubby-faced, quiet-eyed man, with very white hair, round whom the storms of orthodoxy had once beaten, like the surges on a lighthouse; and at Christ Church and in St. Mary's the beautiful presence and the wonderful gift of Liddon kept the old fires burning in pious hearts.
Gladstone from a Gladstonian sentence in a House of Commons debate what remains of them? Liddon wrote of Stanley that he Stanley was "more entirely destitute of the logical faculty" than any educated man he knew. In a sense it was true.
Liddon, the saintly and learned preacher; of the devout worshippers at All Saints', whose black nails show they are artisans; of the society formed to pray daily for the restoration of Christian unity."
For this fact I feel deeply thankful; and I comfort myself with the reflection that the great British preachers of the last dozen years Dr. McLaren, Charles H. Spurgeon, Newman Hall, Canon Liddon, Dr. Dale and Dr. Joseph Parker have suffered no more from the virulent attacks of the radical and revolutionary higher criticism than I have, during my long and happy ministry.
Passing down through the ranks of the hierarchy, I shall presently have something to say about two or three metropolitan Canons who are notable figures in society; but before I come to them I must offer a word of affectionate tribute to the memory of Dr. Liddon.
One of my earliest recollections is of my mother and father taking me to hear Liddon preach; I remember nothing at all about it except that I swallowed a hook and eye during the service: not a very flattering tribute to the great divine! Eyton was a striking preacher and his church was always crowded. I had to stand a long time before I could ever get a seat.
And not only was Christ poor Himself, He spent His life among the poor. "To believe that a man with £60 a year," Canon Liddon once said, "is just as much worthy of respect as a man with £6000, you must be seriously a Christian." You must indeed. Yet that which is for us so hard never seems to have cost Christ a struggle.
Newman, Pusey, Liddon all three, great schoolmen, arguing from an accepted brief; the man of genius, the man of a vast industry, intense but futile, the man of captivating presence and a perfect rhetoric history, with its patient burrowings, has surely undermined the work of all three, sparing only that element in the work of one of them Newman which is the preserving salt of all literature i.e., the magic of personality.
He must go home and study Paley or perhaps Butler's Analogy he owed the church something, and ought to be able to strike a blow for her. Or would not Leighton be better? Or a more modern writer say Neander, or Coleridge, or perhaps Dr. Liddon? There were thousands able to fit him out for the silencing of such foolish men as this Bascombe of the shirt-front!
Liddon, walking with me down the hall of Christ Church, pointed to the portrait of an extremely bloated and sensual-looking prelate on the wall, and said, with that peculiar kind of mincing precision which added so much to the point of his sarcasms, "How singular, dear friend, to reflect that that person was chosen, in the providential order, to connect Mr. Keble with the Apostles!"
