The appearance of Jupiter on his eagle, thunderbolt in hand, of Juno with her peacocks, and of Iris with her many-coloured bow; the Amazon masque and the masque of the Five Worthies, may all be regarded as archaeological; and the vision which Posthumus sees in prison of Sicilius Leonatus 'an old man, attired like a warrior, leading an ancient matron' is clearly so.
He had only wished to get into her room to win his wicked wager. He looked about him and noticed the furniture, and then crept to the side of the bed where Imogen was asleep and took from her arm the gold bracelet which had been the parting gift of her husband. Then he crept back to the trunk, and next morning sailed for Rome. When he met Leonatus, he said
A spectator will honour and pity Othello, and hate and execrate Iago with some infusion, perhaps of impatience toward the one and of admiration for the other but he is likely to view both Leonatus and Iachimo with considerable indifference; he will casually recognise the infrequent Cymbeline as an ill-tempered, sonorous old donkey; he will give a passing smile of scornful disgust to Cloten that vague hybrid of Roderigo and Oswald; and of the proceedings of the Queen and the fortunes of the royal family whether as affected by the chemical experiments of Doctor Cornelius or the bellicose attitude of Augustus Cæsar, in reaching for his British tribute he will be practically unconscious.

The Romans attack Pyrrhus by crossing the river. Extraordinary spectacle. Pyrrhus conspicuous. Conversation between Pyrrhus and Leonatus. Pyrrhus in dreadful danger. The elephants. Trophies borne through the field. Pyrrhus shows himself. The Romans defeated.
He had scarcely spoken these words when he saw the horseman whom Leonatus had pointed out coming down upon him at full speed, with his spear grasped firmly in his hands, and the iron point of it aimed directly at Pyrrhus. Pyrrhus sprang immediately to meet his antagonist, bringing his own spear into aim at the same time. The horses met, and were both thrown down by the shock of the encounter.
See the passages at the commencement of this chapter, if there be any doubt as to this reading. 'In lover's eyes. Leonatus Posthumus. Shall's have a Play of this?
It was, however, in the revolt against Iachimo's perfidy, in the fall before Pisanio's fatal disclosure, and in the frenzy over the supposed death of Leonatus that the actress put forth electrical power and showed how strong emotion, acting through the imagination, can transfigure the being and give to love or sorrow a monumental semblance and an everlasting voice.
It is to that posthumous effect that all the hope points here. It is the Leonatus Posthumus who must fulfil this oracle.
Notwithstanding this, he exposed himself in the hottest parts of the engagement, charging upon the enemy with the most dauntless intrepidity whenever there was occasion, and moving up and down the lines, wherever his aid or the encouragement of his presence was most required. At length one of his generals, named Leonatus, rode up to him and said,
