At intervals in our lonely voyage, there were sights which diversified the scene; especially when the constellation Pisces was in the ascendant. It's famous botanizing, they say, in Arkansas' boundless prairies; I commend the student of Ichthyology to an open boat, and the ocean moors of the Pacific. As your craft glides along, what strange monsters float by. Elsewhere, was never seen their like.

I look anxiously for the forth-coming number of your history of the Echinodermata. . . June 13, 1842. . . .Your letters have given me great pleasure: first, in assuring me that your zeal in ichthyology is undiminished, and that you are about to give such striking proofs of it to the British Association; and next that you still pursue with enthusiasm your admirable researches upon the glaciers.

And he certainly was not sought after by us, but came to me with an important question bearing on ichthyology. He may be a wanderer, as you suggest, and as all the ladies seem to think. But my firm belief is to the contrary. And my reason for asking you about him is a very clear one. He had met you twice, and felt interest in you as a future member of our family.

From this preliminary walk round enough has, we think, been seen to show that the Great International Fisheries Exhibition will prove of interest alike to the ordinary visitor, to those anxious for the well-being of fishermen, to fishermen themselves of every degree, and to the scientific student of ichthyology in all its branches. Nature.

It seems a trifling matter, but it is true; it is so small a point that I searched long before at last I found mention made of it in a German monograph. Aristotle's account of fishes is a prodigious history of habits, food, migrations, modes of capture, times and ways of spawning, and anatomical details; but it is not here that we can elucidate or even illustrate this astonishing Ichthyology.

Kindly allow me to sort them out using this whimsical system of classification.

Many of them run to a great size and give plenty of sport on a rod, though they are not as a rule welcomed. Smelts are best fished for with tiny hooks tied on fine gut and baited with fragments of shrimp, ragworm, and other delicacies. Methods and Practice. Salmon and Trout. Coarse Fish. Sea Fishing. Tackle, Flies, &c. Ichthyology, Fisheries, Fish-Culture, &c. Dr. Fishery Law.

As these comprehensive laws have thrown light upon other types of the animal kingdom beside that of fishes, their discovery may be said to have advanced general zoology as well as ichthyology.

Meantime his contemplated journey to the United States flitted constantly before him. NEUCHATEL, November 19, 1844. . . .Your idea of an illustrated American ichthyology is admirable. But for that we ought to have with us an artist clever enough to paint fishes rapidly from the life.

"It isn't ichthyology; it is dogmatics, which is still more difficult and tangled up. Dogmatics always are." "Dogmatics is quite beyond me, quite; so I am not competing. But on general principles it is my opinion that a colt out of a coyote and a wild-cat is no square dog, but doubtful. That is my hand, and I stand pat." "Well, it is as far as I can go myself, and be fair and conscientious.
