In the re-casting of the plan which followed, my part was even larger; for I designed and cast with my own hand a hot-air grating for the offices, which had the luck or merit to be accepted.

The bath rooms are lined with glazed brickwork. The floor is of fireproof, iron and concrete, construction. Enamelled iron sheets are screwed to the ceiling joists in the hot rooms, and pugging placed over. Under the laconicum is the stokery and furnace chamber, fitted with a small convoluted stove, a hot-air shaft leading to the bath room.

In the ordinary hot-air bath, the heated air is simply a medium; and, as I have endeavoured to explain in the body of this little work, the heat is best supplied to the body of the bather by direct radiation.

Nothing daunted, however, Mr. Spencer at once endeavoured to retrieve his fortunes, and started straightway for the gold-mining districts of Ballarat and Bendigo with a hot-air balloon, with which he successfully gave a series of popular exhibitions of parachute descents. Few aeronauts are more consistently reliable than Mr. Arthur Spencer.

Dodge carried half a dozen large hot-air balloons, which he had made for the purpose. Under the other arm be carried a package that looked as though it had come from a department store.

This bath may be taken from time to time, as may be deemed necessary. While remaining in the hot-air bath the patient may drink freely of cold or tepid water. As soon as the bath is over the patient should be washed with hot water and soap. The hot-air bath is excellent for colds, skin diseases, and the gout. Have a large basin of water of the temperature of 85 or 95 degrees.

"We're going to have a Turkish bath," said Venning, firmly "a real one one that will clear all the germs put at a run, and remove this continual singing in the ears." "Does your head sing?" asked Compton, pressing his forehead. "My brain seems to be on the shake as if it were jelly." "That's the feeling," said Venning; "and I've got a notion. See the well? Good; that's to be our hot-air bath.

The necessary appliances, and arrangements for the heating and ventilation of a bath on the ordinary hot-air principle comprise a furnace in its chamber, with flues or shafts supplying cold, and drawing off the heated air, and a stokery with provisions for firing and storing coke, &c.

Small kerosene or hot-air engines may be employed for the power at very slight cost, and will prove useful for other purposes, such as sawing wood or even operating the sewing-machines. Owing to the many inventions for isolated lighting plants by acetylene and other kinds of gas, dwellers in the country have virtually as free a choice of illumination as the people in towns and cities.

But they did not talk much, for there was only one subject possible to the two cardinals, and the chaplains had not yet been admitted into the full secret. It was growing cold now, and even the hot-air foot-rests did not quite compensate for the deathly iciness of the breath that began to stream down from the Alps, which the ship was now approaching at a slight incline.
