Something in the voice was strangely familiar but the "horn-swoggled" settled it. "Ben Stubbs," gasped all the, boys simultaneously and rushed out of the garage to the street. Here they found a stoutly-built, crisp-bearded man with a face tanned to what Billy called a "weathered oak finish," arguing loudly with a taxicab chauffeur.
"Well I'll be horn-swoggled!" cried Washington, leaning against the big fruit, which easily, supported him. "Hurrah!" cried Jack, drawing his knife from his pocket and opening the largest blade. "I always did like peaches. Now I can have all I want," and he drove the steel into the object, cutting off a big slice which he began to eat. "It may be poisonous!" exclaimed Mark.
Any acceptance of the young reporter's generous offer was interrupted by a sudden noise in the usually quiet street. "I tell you the fare's a dollar!" the boys heard an angry voice declaim. "'Tain't nothing of the kind or I'm a lubber fifty cents is all I'll pay. I'll be horn-swoggled if you get a cent more, yer deep-sea pirate," was the indignant phrased reply.
Then the younger man leaned to his horse's mane in a silent laugh while Sergeant Jim looked me over again and remarked that he would be horn-swoggled! "I'm willing," I responded, and we all laughed. The younger horseman asked my name. "Smith," I said, with dignity, and they laughed again, their laugh growing louder when I would not smile.
Danny and Chris, being boys, were ashamed to give vent to their emotions in a similar way and stood looking down at the huddled forms in the road. Chris, after a time, found himself weeping in sympathy and openly rubbed away the tears with his shirt sleeve. Even Danny swallowed hard and dabbed at his eyes. "Well, I'll be horn-swoggled!" exclaimed a startled, mystified voice back of the children.
An instant later, to the surprise of the boys, no less than Mr. Post, there was a quick application of the air brakes, so much so that the passengers were nearly thrown from their seats. Then with a grinding and shrieking the train came to a stop. "What did I tell you?" inquired Professor Punjab. "Well I'll be horn-swoggled!" exclaimed Mr. Post. "What's the matter?" asked several travelers.
