That form which 'lies there, with its mute eloquence speaking this Poet's word, is what he calls 'a Transient Hieroglyphic, which makes, he says, 'a deeper impression on minds of a certain order, than the language of arbitrary signs; and his 'delivery' on the most important questions will be found, upon examination, to derive its principal emphasis from a running text in this hand.
Why strain laboriously to settle names, and dates, and dynasties? What mere point they have occupied in the processes of the great universe! Their hieroglyphic pillars, their gray old pyramids; what are they to the age of Uranus, or the new planet?

This appearance was of course entirely suitable and most providential for one engaged in deciphering hieroglyphic inscriptions and scrolls.
Paper casts of the inscriptions, which are deeply cut in the walls and painted green, were made for Professor Maspero, the Director of the Service of Antiquities in Egypt, and from these he printed an edition in hieroglyphic type of all five texts, and added a French translation of the greater part of them.
Rotten, and covered with a thick coat of dirt, the boards of the floor presented a very insecure footing; the bare walls were scored all over with grotesque designs, the chief of which represented the punishment of Nebuchadnezzar.
