Here is a story of Toa and Pale, or Hero and Helper. The King of Fiji was a savage cannibal, and the people were melting away under him. Toa and Pale were brothers, they wished to escape being killed for the oven, and so fled to the bush and became trees.
"I said, 'God being my helper, I will be a man again, and I am trying." "Andrew Hall," said his old friend, solemnly, as he laid his hand on his shoulder, "if you are really in earnest if you do mean, in the help of God, to try all will be well. But in his help alone is there any hope. Have you seen Mr. Paulding?" "No." "Why not?" "He has no faith in me. I have deceived him too often."
Satisfied at last, he climbed back into the plane. A member of the ground crew took his place at the propeller. "Petrol off, sir?" "Petrol off." Whish! Whish! went the prop as the helper began pulling it over against compression. "Contact, sir!" "Contact." The motor caught, coughed, caught again and the prop whirled into an indistinct blur.
"Respected Towy-Watkins am I." He whose face shone like a polished mirror answered that he was Moses the Keeper of the Balance. "The Lord is in the Cloud," he said. Towy addressed the Cloud, which was the breadth of a man's hand, and which was brighter than the golden halo of the throne: "Big Man, peep at your helper. Was not I a ruler over the capel? Religious were my prayers."
Because they believe that He died for them individually, and that He lives an ascended yet ever-present Helper and Lover of their souls. My brethren, that conviction, and that conviction only, as I venture to affirm, has power to send a glow of love into the heart which will move all the limbs in swift and happy obedience.
We are here taught that God made one, and only one to be man's companion and helper that he might seek a godly feed. One is necessary for this purpose; more would rather hinder than help. With one there is a joint interest; more would cause divisions. To answer the ends proposed, the connexion must be for life.
I doubt whether many of us, like the beloved disciple, have leaned our heads on His heart of love, and felt its throbs. Too much of the time He seems in Heaven to me, not here." "I never had much religious instruction," said Edith, simply. "I found Him in the New Testament, as people of old found Him in Palestine, and I went to Him, just as I was, and He has been such a Friend and Helper.
Thus helped, Sir William completed his course; his reputation as a lecturer was established; and he eventually became recognised throughout Europe as one of the leading intellects of his time. The woman who soothes anxiety by her presence, who charms and allays irritability by her sweetness of temper, is a consoler as well as a true helper.
Such liberality did not commend itself to the annalists of an age that was still rioting in a very carnival of religious persecution. Radisson always invoked the blessing of Heaven on his enterprises and rendered thanks for his victories; but he was indifferent as to whether he was acting as lay helper with the Jesuits, or allied to the Huguenots of London and Boston.
The whole corporation was constantly bribed, rebribed, and often sur-rebribed; so that a horse-keeper, ostler, or helper, was held by the philosophical at that time to be the most corrupt character in the nation.
