Grog-shops and other resorts for the depraved and idle, are already plentiful in Victoria. Before concluding my remarks on Hong Kong, I will add a few words on what I consider as the best means to be adopted with a view to render the settlement more healthy. Much must be done by the Government; and the rest may be left to the inhabitants themselves.
Up to the time, however, at which I was at St. Louis, martial law had chiefly been used in closing grog-shops and administering the oath of allegiance to suspected secessionists. Something also had been done in the way of raising money by selling the property of convicted secessionists; and while I was there eight men were condemned to be shot for destroying railway bridges.
The praise he bestows both on the police and soldiers was richly deserved; and he may well say that "with pride he desires to record that in this city, surrounded with grog-shops, but one single instance of drunkenness has fallen under his observation."
You may be surprised at my saying this, and may ask if I have not had as much honor and praise as I deserve. I do not deny it. How, for instance, if I have any desirable place in one denomination, could the "Christian World" venture to say that I had done more hurt by my observation about teetotalism in my Washington discourse than all the grog-shops in the land!

He continued strolling on, comparing the cramped misty London aspect of things with his visionary free dream of the glorious prairies, where his other life was: the forests, the mountains, the endless expanses; the horses, the flocks, the slipshod ease of language and attire; and the grog-shops. Aha! There could be no mistake about him as a gentleman and a scholar out there!
And not only did they thoroughly root out and destroy all the thieves' dens and low grog-shops and places of ill-fame, but they literally hunted the owners and occupants of them right out into the bush. I must now tell you of the murderer's end.
The grog-shops were open, in which men with bloody noses, and bruised and battered faces, obtained the necessary stimulus to continue the desperate struggle. Dirty, slovenly-dressed women stood in the door- ways or on the steps, swearing and denouncing both police and military in the coarsest language.
The only native house to which I was able to gain access was furnished in the worst possible mixture of European and native styles to be found in many Jewish houses in Morocco, but from what I gleaned from others this was no exception to the rule. Unfortunately the number of grog-shops is unduly large, with all their attendant evils.
Haunting melodies, folk-song as truly as that of the plantation negro, they vanished from the sea with a breed of men who, for all their faults, possessed the valor of the Viking and the fortitude of the Spartan. Outcasts ashore which meant to them only the dance halls of Cherry Street and the grog-shops of Ratcliffe Road they had virtues that were as great as their failings.
