We know that in Sweden the rate of the rise of the land is far from uniform, being only a few inches in a century near Stockholm, while north of it and beyond Gefle it amounts to as many feet in the same number of years. Let us suppose with Charpentier that the Alps gained in height several thousand feet at the time when the intense cold of the glacial period was coming on.

At Gefle, too, an annual industrial exposition is held, where you may see on exhibit all the utensils manufactured or used by the people all kinds of machinery, tools, and implements, recent novelties in patents, weaving, wood-carving, and a large part of the exposition building is given up to beautiful articles in iron, in the manufacture of which we have said the Swedes excel.

I slept after this, until aroused by the old Swede, as we entered Gefle. We drove across a broad bridge, looked over vessels frozen into the inlet of the Gulf, passed a large public square, and entered the yard of the diligence office.

"We have stopped at Gefle and seen the docks with their great piles of lumber and barrels of tar; and we have been to Upsala, the ancient capital of Sweden, and seen the famous University which was founded fifteen years before Columbus discovered America."

To fully appreciate the value of this industry, one should visit Gefle, the most important shipping point on the eastern coast of Sweden. Here there is a fine harbor, with docks and warehouses owned by the government.

A little west of Gefle is the town of Fahlun, which is the headquarters of the Kopparberg Mining Company, the, oldest industrial corporation in the world. The buildings date back to the seventeenth century and the mines are even more ancient.

By dint of blundering, I gradually circumscribed the range of my inquiries, and finally came to a focus at the right place. Having ordered horses at six the next morning, and despatched the förbud tickets by the afternoon's mail, I felt that I had made a good beginning, and we set out to make the tour of Gefle.

"The councillors from Gefle claimed Your Majesty's immediate attention," Bjelke reminded him. "So you said at the time. But the business seemed none so urgent when we came to it. There was no other reason in your mind no suspicion?" His keen, dark blue eyes were fixed upon the pale masklike face of the secretary. That grave, almost stern countenance relaxed into a smile.

From Stockholm I drove to Upsala by road for I did not care for railway travelling changing horse and vehicle at every post station. When I reached Gefle winter had come on in earnest. Now all the houses in the hamlets and towns which I passed had double windows, and at the bottom, between the two, a layer of cotton was spread to absorb the moisture.

All that I could say would be mere talk and I felt that action was necessary, and not words." Bessemer, op. cit. Ibid., p. 171. Action took the form of continued experiments and, by the end of 1857, a decision to build his own plant at Sheffield. An important collateral development resulted from the visit to London in May 1857 of G. F. Goransson of Gefle, Sweden.
