Gaya's face grew questioning. She asked, "Is something the matter?" "Probably not," said Trigger. She considered. "If you laugh," she warned, "I'll hate you." She indicated the ribbons again. "What is that Beldon really?" Gaya blinked. "You haven't been around our decadent circles long enough," she said soberly. Then she did laugh. "Don't hate me, Trigger! Anyway, it's very high fashion.
The diverse classes of creatures dwelling in the ocean, the woods, the islands, the rivers male and female, the waters, the towns, the provinces, and even in heaven, were all gratified with wealth and food distributed at Gaya's sacrifices. And they all said, "No other sacrifice can come up to this one of Gaya."
But she was wide awake now. "Shielded here!" she said quickly as soon as her image cleared. "Go ahead!" "It's nothing important," Trigger said hastily. Gaya relaxed. "It's just " she held up the ribbons. "Major Quillan sent me this." Gaya uttered a small squeal. "Oh! Beautiful! A Beldon!" "That's what it says." Gaya smiled. "He must like you!" "Oh?" said Trigger. She hesitated.
A processional terrace surrounds the walled pavement supporting the grey edifice, and the sculptured bas-reliefs denote the transitional stage of Buddhist faith, as it materialised through Jainism into the Puranic mythology of Hindu creed. The central chapel contains the famous picture in stone known as "The Tree of Knowledge," and represents the Buddha beneath the sacred Bo-Tree of Gaya.
As sand grains on earth, as stars in the firmament, as drops showered by rain-charged clouds, cannot ever be counted by anybody, so can none count the gifts in Gaya's sacrifice!" "O son of the Kuru race, many times did king Gaya perform sacrifices of this description, here, by the side of this Brahmasara!"
"She probably attached herself to the group as soon as she discovered Lyad had come on board. Which," Quillan said, "is exactly what I would have told Gaya to do if I'd spotted Lyad first." Trigger was silent a little longer this time. "Were you thinking this Lyad could be...." "One of our suspects? Well," said Quillan judiciously, "let's say Lyad has all the basic qualifications.
Upon the completion of that sacrifice five and twenty hills of food remained untouched, and many lakes and several beautifully flowing rivulets of juicy drinks, and many heaps, besides, of robes and ornaments. And in consequence of the merit of that great sacrifice, Gaya came to be well-known in the three worlds. And due to that sacrifice are the eternal Banian and the sacred Brahmasara.
In his great Horse-sacrifice, king Gaya, making a golden earth, gave her away unto the Brahmanas. In that sacrifice, the stakes of king Gaya were exceedingly costly, being of gold, decked with gems delightful to all creatures. Capable of killing every wish, Gaya gave those stakes unto well-pleased Brahmanas and other people.
And, O Yudhishthira! the celestials together with Indra, themselves erected the sacrificial stakes of shining gold which had been prepared for his sacred rites. In all those magnificent sacrifices instituted by Gaya, the protector of the earth, Indra, was delighted by drinking the Soma juice, and the ministering priests were gratified with the gratuities paid to them.
'And thus it was, O Fountain of Wisdom, that I decided to go to the Holy Places which His foot had trod to the Birthplace, even to Kapila; then to Mahabodhi, which is Buddh Gaya to the Monastery to the Deer-park to the place of His death. The lama lowered his voice. 'And I come here alone.
