Hesiod is our earliest authority for the Deucalion Flood story. For its probable Babylonian origin, cf. Farnell, Greece and Babylon , p. 184. De Syria dea, 12 f. Thus the Babylonian, Hebrew, and Greek Deluge stories resolve themselves, not into a nature myth, but into an early legend, which has the basis of historical fact in the Euphrates Valley.
In religion the cardinal moment is the same. It consists in the coming of Homer's 'Olympian Gods', and that is to be the subject of the present essay. I am not, of course, going to describe the cults and characters of the various Olympians. For that inquiry the reader will naturally go to the five learned volumes of my colleague, Dr. Farnell.
The well-known "Druid," of show-yard celebrity, was descended from "Cup-Bearer" and from "Dora," bred to Mr Ruxton of Farnell. "Windsor" was afterwards introduced. He was bought from George Brown, Westerton of Fochabers, for two hundred guineas, and took the first prize at Edinburgh in the aged bull class; the silver medal to the breeder came to Tillyfour.
Max Muller observes that 'Mannhardt's mythological researches have never been fashionable. They are now very much in fashion; they greatly inspire Mr. Frazer and Mr. Farnell. 'They seemed to me, and still seem to me, too exclusive, says Mr. Mr. Max Muller also mentions his own complaints, of 'the omnipresent sun and the inevitable dawn appearing in ever so many disguises.

For the wide diffusion, in the myths of remote peoples, of a vague theory that would trace all created things to a watery origin, see Farnell, Greece and Babylon, p. 180. Cf., e.g., Isaiah xxix. 16, xlv. 9; and Jeremiah xviii. 2f. When we turn to Babylonia, we find there also evidence of conflicting ideas, the product of different and to some extent competing religious centres.
Both of these scholars descend intellectually from a man less scholarly than they, but, perhaps, more original and acute than any of us, my friend the late Mr. J. F. McLennan. To Mannhardt also much is owed, and, of course, above all, to Dr. Tylor. These writers, like Mr. Farnell and Mr.
Professor Diederichs has said that "in much ancient ritual it was thought that mystic communion with the deity could be obtained through the semblance of sex-intercourse as in the Attis-Cybele worship, and the Isis-ritual." Farnell, op. cit., iii. 176. Messrs. In the stage of simple Consciousness this must have been one of the first things that the budding intellect perceived.
