Many of our great dramatic writers, Beaumont, Fletcher, Ben Jonson, Middleton, Dekker, Shirley, Carew, were constrained by the fashion of the time to apply their invention to gratify this taste for decorative representation. No less an artist than Inigo Jones must occasionally stoop to construct the machinery.

Street bullies, such as are introduced in Nabbes' Bride, Middleton and W. Rowley's Fair Quarrel, &c. The exploits of a "Roaring Girl" are admirably set forth by Dekker and Middleton. "Against Cursing and Swearing," Works, 1630. Three to One, &c. Sc. companions: Mids. Night's Dream, III., i.; Shirley's Wedding, k. v., &c. "The Infinity of Love Holds no proportion with Arithmetick."

They are depicted with traits so easily recognisable that as Dekker says in his 'Satiromastix' of five hundred people four hundred could 'all point with their fingers in one instant at one and the same man. More especially against two disciples of the Muse is Jonson's 'gally ink' directed.

Dramatist, the servant and friend of Ben Jonson, produced upwards of 20 plays, some in conjunction with Dekker and others. He had no original genius, but knew stage-craft well. Novelist, dau. of the Rev. Patrick B., a clergyman of Irish descent and of eccentric habits who embittered the lives of his children by his peculiar theories of education.

But in THESE notes the names of the authors of the plays acted are never mentioned. Does this suggest that Bacon wrote all these plays? On the other hand, there are frequent mentions of advances of money to authors who were working at plays for Henslowe, singly, or in pairs, threes, fours, or fives. We find Drayton, Dekker, Chapman, and nine authors now forgotten by all but antiquarians.

The two persons who are specially taken to task, and most harshly treated, are Demetrius Fannius, 'play-dresser and plagiarius, and RUFUS LABERIUS CRISPINUS, 'poetaster and plagiarius. In 'Satiromastix, Demetrius clearly comes out as Dekker.

This was not a mere theory, but a vital active belief, as the beautiful well-known lines at the commencement of the eighth canto of the second book of "The Faerie Queene," and the use made of these opposing spirits in Marlowe's "Dr. Faustus," and in "The Virgin Martyr," by Massinger and Dekker, conclusively show.

His next was The Shepherd's Garland , afterwards reprinted as Eclogues. Three historical poems, Gaveston , Matilda , and Robert, Duke of Normandie followed, and he then appears to have collaborated with Dekker, Webster, and others in dramatic work. The rushing verse is full of vigour and gusto.

Thus Corin is Chapman; Musaeus, of course Marlowe; English Horace, no doubt Jonson; Melicert, Shakespeare; Coridon, Drayton; Anti-Horace, most likely Dekker, and Moelibee, mentioned with him, possibly Marston. Throughout Chettle assumes to himself Spenser's pastoral title.

'I have ever cherished a good opinion of other men's witty labours, especially of that full and heightened style of Master Chapman; the laboured and understanding works of Mr. Jonson; the no less witty composures of the both wittily excellent Mr. Beaumont and Mr. Dekker, and Mr. Heywood.
