It made me mad to hear that good, noble creeter's name cut off and demeaned, and I told Irena so. And she sez, "That's what little Benjy calls our old white duck; his name is Columbus, but he calls it Colum." She is a great duck-raiser; but I didn't thank her for alludin' to barn-yard fowls in such a time as this. Wall, there wuz the first life of Columbus ever writ, by his son Farnendo.
"I have, as ye say," answered the trapper, "ben in wars. I've stood in battle; I've slain men; I've buried those I have slain; I know what it is to take a human creeter's life, and I think I know where the right to do the deed stops and where it begins." "Where does it begin?" asked the man; "where does the right to take human life begin?"
But there's one thing I can't exactly make out yet," she added "how did you first come to know all about Mary's child?" "All? There wasn't no all in it, till I see the child herself. Except knowing that the poor creeter's baby had been born alive, I knowed nothing when I first come away from the old place in the country. Child! I hadn't nothing of the sort in my mind, when I got back to London.
And I sez, "Could you set and enjoy yourself lookin' on a fountain risin' up and dashin' jewels of spray all round you, and thinkin' that every drop wuz bein' pumped up by the weary feet of your own girl by your first wife? That poor delicate little creeter's tired feet, toilin' on hour by hour and day by day."
"Oh, Limuel," his wife protested; "a body to hear you talk would think that you don't do anything at all but thirst for blood. If the Lord puts it in the mind of a steer to kick you, why, it ain't the poor creeter's fault." The old man snorted. "And if the Lord puts it in my mind to kill the steer it ain't my fault, muther.
