The story of the raiding of the Emden has already been given; but here the story of the landing party is given as told by Captain Mücke himself on May 10, 1915, at Damascus: "On November 9, 1914," he said, "I left the Emden in order to destroy the wireless plant on Cocos Island. I had fifty men, four machine guns, about thirty rifles.
In these countreys when the people be sicke they make a vow to offer meat vnto the diuell, if they escape: and when they be recouered they make a banket with many pipes and drummes and other instruments, and dansing all the night, and their friends come and bring gifts, cocos, figges, arrecaes, and other fruits, and with great dauncing and reioycing they offer to the diuell, and say, they giue the diuel to eat, and driue him out.

In this island Candish, or Cavendish, announced their nationality to the natives whom he had made pay tribute in "Hogges, Hennes, Potatoes, and Cocos" and their hostility to the Spaniards.
"We are rejoiced to see you," said the mother of the juveniles, a stout woman of mixed nationality that of Dutch apparently predominating. She spoke English, however, remarkably well, as did many of the Cocos people, though Malay is the language of most of them.
The scheme was fascinating, and a very golden life they would have had of it, those lucky mutineers, had not some spoil-sport come sneaking privily to Morgan with a tale of what was toward. They might have seized Cocos Island or Juan Fernandez, or "some other island," such as one of the Enchanted, or Gallapagos, Islands, where the goddesses were thought to dwell.
The fibrous strands of the rind of the nut are developed in some forms to such a length and strength as to yield the industrial product known as the coir-fibre. Only three of them are mentioned by Miquel that have this quality, the Cocos nucifera rutila, cupuliformis and stupposa.
It must not be imagined, however, that our friends have settled down there to spend their lives in idleness. By no means. There is no such condition as idleness in the lives of good men and women.

This Corypha covers a part of the southern coast and takes the place of the majestic palma real and the Cocos crispa of the northern coast.

ALLOUFATOU, or HORN Island, ONOUAFU, or PROBY Island, and HUNTER Islands, lie between the Navigator and Fidji groups. I can find no distinct accounts of them. FIDJI or VITI GROUP.
