Many of those, therefore, that wished Antony well, went straight to him, among them tribunes and a few praetors: others remained in their places, one of whom was Calenus, but did all that they could for him, some things secretly and other things with an open defence of their conduct.
"We are fighting for the temples of our gods, for our walls, our homes, for the abode of the Roman people, for their Penates, their altars, their hearths for the graves of ancestors and we are fighting only against Antony. * Fufius Calenus tells us of peace as though I of all men did not know that peace was a blessing. But tell me, Calenus, is slavery peace?" He is very angry with Calenus.
The entire army of Pompeius was assembled; Caesar on the other hand still expected the corps of nearly two legions formerly detached to Aetolia and Thessaly, now stationed under Quintus Fufius Calenus in Greece, and the two legions of Cornificius which were sent after him by the land-route from Italy and had already arrived in Illyria.
'Enter, my friend, said Arbaces, 'while I hold the lamp on high, that thou mayst glut thine eyes on the yellow heaps. The impatient Calenus did not wait to be twice invited; he hastened towards the aperture. Scarce had he crossed the threshold, when the strong hand of Arbaces plunged him forwards.
Brutus felt the rule an oppression, but Cassius hated the ruler; and, among other reasons on which he grounded his quarrel against Caesar, the loss of his lions which he had procured when he was aedile elect was one: for Caesar, finding these in Megara, when that city was taken by Calenus, seized them to himself.
As he thus soliloquised, he crossed through the open court into the peristyle, where a few lamps here and there broke upon the empire of the starlit night; and issuing from one of the chambers that bordered the colonnade, suddenly encountered Arbaces. 'Ho! Calenus seekest thou me? said the Egyptian; and there was a little embarrassment in his voice.
'Arbaces, replied Calenus, losing all the vulgar audacity of his natural character, 'verily thou art a Magician; thou readest the heart as it were a scroll. 'It is my vocation, answered the Egyptian, laughing gently. 'Well, then, forbear; and when all is over, I will make thee rich.
'I hear from a thousand lips that she is a second Helen, said Calenus; and he smacked his own lips, but whether at the wine or at the notion it is not easy to decide. 'Yes, she has a beauty that Greece itself never excelled, resumed Arbaces. 'But that is not all: she has a soul worthy to match with mine. She has a genius beyond that of woman keen dazzling bold.
'Ho! guards remove Arbaces guard Calenus! Sallust, we hold you responsible for your accusation. Let the sports be resumed. 'What! cried Calenus, turning round to the people, 'shall Isis be thus contemned? Shall the blood of Apaecides yet cry for vengeance? Shall justice be delayed now, that it may be frustrated hereafter? Shall the lion be cheated of his lawful prey? A god! a god!
But now he occupied it in person, for he found Calenus dead of a disease and acquired his army without difficulty.
