Besides those that had been demolished, and also of the maritime cities, Gaza, and Joppa, and Dora, and Strato's Tower; which last Herod rebuilt after a glorious manner, and adorned with havens and temples, and changed its name to Caesarea. All these Pompey left in a state of freedom, and joined them to the province of Syria.
In the 13th verse we read that Jesus at Caesarea Philippi asked His disciples, "Whom do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?" When they had answered, He asked them, "But whom say ye that I am?" And in verse 16 Peter answered and said, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God."
And now Jesus went right away from the Sea of Galilee again to Caesarea Philippi. That place was called Caesarea after Augustus Caesar, Emperor of Rome, and Philippi after Herod Philip. Then Jesus called the people who stood near, and His disciples too, and He told them that if they followed Him, they too might have to die for His sake.
Let therefore, said he, those among you who are able, go down with me, and accuse him, if there be anything criminal in this man. And after staying with them more than ten days, he went down to Caesarea; and on the morrow seated on the bench, commanded Paul to be brought.
And the high-priest and the principal persons among the Jews informed him against Paul, and entreated him, begging it as a favour from him, that he would send him back to Jerusalem, lying in wait for him to kill him on the road. Then Festus answered, that Paul should be kept in custody at Caesarea, and that he himself was going thither shortly.
Jameson says, "lived, or are supposed to have lived, in the first ages of Christianity: and whose real history, founded on fact or tradition, has been so disguised by poetical embroidery, that they have in some sort the air of ideal beings;" and which may, therefore, be taken as a complete test of the authoress's tact and honesty: In the province of Cappadocia and in the city of Caesarea, dwelt a noble virgin, whose name was Dorothea.
He built a new and magnificent palace on the hill of Zion, and rebuilt the fortress of Baris, which he called Antonia in honor of his friend and patron, Antony. He also erected strong citadels in different cities of his kingdom, and rebuilt Samaria; he founded Caesarea and colonized it with Greeks, so that it became a great maritime city, rivalling Tyre in magnificence and strength.
And the next day they entered into Caesarea. Now Cornelius was expecting them, having called together his relations and nearest friends. And as Peter was entering, Cornelius met him, and falling at his feet, paid him homage. But Peter raised him up, saying, Arise; I also myself am a man. And conversing with him, he entered, and found many assembled together.
Promptly he acted, without waiting for the Council's application to him. At once he prepared to despatch Paul to Caesarea, glad enough, no doubt, to wash his hands of so troublesome a charge. Thus he too was a cog in the wheel, an instrument to fulfil the promise made in vision, God's servant though he knew it not.
He had managed to live by teaching in the high schools of Alexandria, Athens, and Caesarea, and by preparing medicines from choice herbs drinking water instead of wine, eating bread and fruit instead of quails and pies; and he had made a friend of many a good man, but never yet of a woman it would be difficult with such a face as his!
