Robert had been rightly told about the summit of Bredon Hill, for there the grass is as short as on the South Downs, and there is a deep fosse in which to shelter from the wind. The hill at this western point ends suddenly, at a kind of precipice, and you look right over the valley of the Avon and the Severn to the Malverns.

This town of Diseworth is divided into three parishes; one part belongs under Locington, in which part standeth my father's house, over-against the west end of the steeple, in which I was born: some other farms are in the parish of Bredon, the rest in the parish of Diseworth. In this town, but in the parish of Lockington, was I born, the first day of May 1602.

After lunch Mary sang the beautiful Bredon Hill song to them; and so they descended to the level ground and to Kink and Hester and Gregory, little expecting to find them with such exciting things to tell. From Beckford to Oxenton the great story lasted, eked out with questions and answers as it proceeded.

How scrumptiously exciting!" "My bed's over there," said Gregory. "Where do you stop at night?" Patricia asked. "I have to go to the farmers and get leave to camp on their land," said Gregory. "And is it just you two and the driver?" Patricia asked. "Oh, no," said Gregory; "there are five others, but they are walking over Bredon Hill.

She started, and almost boxed his ears. "It's from your son, Arthur," he said. "What now !" cried Mrs. Morel. "'My dearest Mother," Paul read, "'I don't know what made me such a fool. I want you to come and fetch me back from here. I came with Jack Bredon yesterday, instead of going to work, and enlisted.

Stretched around us are the Cotswolds, and if we take a path, or lane, leading over the hill westward we may, from the brow, behold Malvern's rugged length and the isolated mass of Bredon.

At the top is the Bell Tower, and the church spires are seen near it. From the railway embankment, or the higher ground beyond, the best picture which the town affords is to be seen. Below us winds the river, and over the meadows on an eminence is the cluster of houses forming the town; as a background we have Bredon Hill, delicately outlined, or dark blue as if overhanging the vale.

The distance from Bredon to Faringdon through Cheltenham, Cirencester, and Fairford, was roughly forty-five miles, or five days of nine miles each.

She talked so enthusiastically and prettily about it that she quite won over Robert, who decided that Bredon would be quite as interesting as Salisbury Plain, and would give him practice, too, in estimating square miles; so that there were two for Bredon Hill, as against one for all the other places. Gregory, however, was not for Bredon.

The hill country does not come within the limits of this volume, but it may be easily reached the nearest points being Broadway, and the villages of Ashton-under-hill and Elmley Castle, both lying under Bredon.
