The only trial which, by a strange chance, was kept clear of all such influences the only instance in which two distinct stocks of mankind were crossed, and their progeny intermarried without any admixture from without is the famous case of the Pitcairn Islanders, who were the progeny of Bligh's English sailors by Tahitian women.

However, it all came to this, that I was to come to church as oft as ever I could, and bring my prayer-book with me, an' read up all the sponsers after the clerk, an' stand, an' kneel, an' sit, an' do all as I should, and take the Lord's Supper at every opportunity, an' hearken his sermons, and Maister Bligh's, an' it 'ud be all right: if I went on doing my duty, I should get a blessing at last.

It is painful to be obliged to write thus of one who rose to positions of honour in the service; but the evidence led in open court, coupled with Bligh's own writings, and testimony from other quarters, proves beyond a doubt that his conduct on board the Bounty was not only dishonourable but absolutely brutal.

Don't tell me it's that damned Dutchman don't pitch me that old Vanderdecken tale give me an easy one first, something about a sea-serpent.... You did hear that bell, didn't you?" "Shut up a minute listen " Again Bligh's voice was lifted up. "This is the cov'nant that I make: From henceforth nevermore Will I again the world destroy With water, as before."

From whatever cause it might arise, whether from his opposition to the practice of all the chief persons in the colony making a profit by the sale of spirits, or from his dislike of the New South Wales Corps, or from his own harsh and tyrannical conduct, whether, in short, we listen to Governor Bligh's admirers or enemies, thus much is certain: he was excessively unpopular with a large and powerful party of men in the settlement.

They fell one by one at the border of the wood and slept. You could count their bodies in the clear white light. I tried to shut the sight from my eyes, but it followed me to my bed-room! "May 3d. I whispered my message to the sea again, but am alone God knows how much alone!" I folded up the paper and looked at the others. Peter Bligh's pipe had gone out and lay idle in his hand.

It was, therefore, Captain Bligh's good seamanship, his strict discipline and fairness in the method of giving food and wine to those who were sick, that enabled them to land at Timor with the whole of their number alive, with the exception of the one man who was stoned to death by the savages at Tofoa.

Here they were met by Bligh's daughter, who endeavoured to persuade them to retire; but they made her stand aside and marched up the avenue. Meantime the Governor had hidden himself in the house; the soldiers entered and searched everywhere for him, till at length they discovered him behind a bed, where he was seeking to hide important papers.

In the case of the Bounty mutiny the evidence of Bligh's opponents that the captain of the Bounty was a tyrannical officer remains uncontradicted by any authority but that of the Bounty's captain; in the case of the New South Wales revolt we can only judge of the probabilities, for the witnesses at the Johnston court-martial were of necessity upon one side.

It is chiefly interesting on account of its having been the refuge of the mutinous crew of Captain Bligh's ship, the 'Bounty. The mutineers, after having turned their captain and a few of the crew out in an open boat, tried to make a settlement in the Society Islands; but failing, they, accompanied by some Otaheitans, fixed themselves in this isolated spot.
