M. Legrain has now explained this as a model of the machine used to raise heavy stones from tier to tier of a pyramid or other building, and illustrations of the method of its use may be found in Choisy's Art de Bâtir chez les anciens Egyptiens. There is little doubt that this primitive machine is that to which Herodotus refers as having been used in the erection of the pyramids.

PLACE, Ninive, vol. i. p. 264. Ibid. p. 265. RICH made similar observations at Bagdad. M. A. CHOISY, well known by his Essays on L'Art de bâtir chez les Romains, shows that the same method was constantly used by the Byzantine architects. See also Mr. STRABO, xvi. i. 5, Hoi oikoi kamarôtoi pantes dia tên axulian. Brick played, at least, by far the most important part in their construction.

Aristote disait que 'Si l'art de batir etait dans le bois, cet art agirait comme la nature. A la place de l'art de batir M. Darwin met l'election naturelle, et c'est tout un: l'un n'est pas plus chimerique que l'autre." And this is really all that M. Flourens can make of Natural Selection.

There was one man who never joined in any of the compliments paid to the rising orator; there was one man who always spoke of him with contempt, who pronounced that "Vivian would never go far in politics that it was not in him that he was too soft que c'etoit batir sur de la boue, que de compter sur lui."

It is a dull piece. Four fairies, Palatiane, Hortésie, Apellanire, and Calliopée, make long speeches about their specialty in Art, as seen at Vaux. Their names sufficiently denote it. "fait bâtir un palais magnifique, règne l'ordre Ionique Avec beaucoup d'agrément." Apollo comes and promises to take charge of the live-stock, and of the picture-gallery. The Muses, too, are busy.
