A little more excitement than usual occurred on 13th October, when a demonstration was made by the artillery and the throwing of smoke bombs. The tour ended on the 10th November, when the Battalion was relieved and marched to billets at La Creche, near Bailleul, where it stayed for a month enjoying its first rest since embarkation. Second Phase.

Nearly all were young, many of them bore the most ancient historical names of their country, every one was arrayed in magnificent costume. It was regarded as ominous, that the man who led the procession, Philip de Bailleul, was lame. The line was closed by Brederode and Count Louis, who came last, walking arm in arm.

When this was over, and we had been grimaced off the premises by "inmates" at the windows, we went back into Bailleul and made for the "Faucon d'Or," an old hotel that stands in the square. Here we had a civilized meal. You could have quite a good dinner here if you liked. A curious thought occurred to me then, and as it occurs again to me now I write it down.

On the 3d of September President Bailleul returned with the other deputies, and made a report in Parliament of his journey to Court; it was, in brief, that the Queen thanked the Parliament for their good intentions, and had commanded them to assure the Parliament in her name that she was ready to restore peace to Guienne, and that it would have been done before now had not M. de Bouillon, who had treated with the Spaniards, made himself master of Bordeaux, and thereby cut off the effects of his Majesty's goodness.

One morning Huggie, Cecil, and I obtained leave to visit Béthune and the La Bassée district. It was in the middle of January, three months after we had left Beuvry. We tore into Bailleul and bumped along the first mile of the Armentières road. That mile is without any doubt the most excruciatingly painful pavé in the world. We crossed the railway and raced south.

"Mr Brown here?" "Ye e s," sleepily, "what the devil do you want?" "Our battery's in action, sir, a few miles from here. I've got your horses ready waiting, sir." Mr Brown was thoroughly awake in a moment. He disturbed everybody collecting his kit. Then he vanished. We were late at Bailleul, and there was no one to meet us. The Cyclists as usual came to our help.

Lecour thought it glorious. In a few moments he and his host were seated at tea. The lofty window-doors stood open to let in the June zephyrs. With the two wigged and liveried servants attending, the scene to Lecour seemed the acting of a beautiful charade, the introduction to an unreal existence. De Bailleul noted the delicacy of his hand and the tastefulness of his violet-tinted coat.

"MON CHER DE BAILLEUL, They tell me to my amazement that it is you who are the protector of the young Canadian Lecour, who is just now making such a noise as an adventurer. He has at least obtained a high commission in the Bodyguard by the use of your name. I have no doubt that you are aware that he is the son of Lecour of St. Elphège, my former cantineer.

It dropped on the other side of the street; doing our despatch rider no damage, it slightly wounded Sergeant Croucher of the Cyclists in a portion of his body that made him swear when he was classed as a "sitting-up case." Of all the towns behind the lines Béthune, Estaires, Armentières, Bailleul, Poperinghe Béthune is the pleasantest. The people are charming.

Their advance here was slower, but by the 16th they had mastered Wytschaete, Wulverghem, Neuve Eglise, Bailleul, and Meteren, and were facing the line of hills running from Mt. Kemmel to the Mt. des Cats. British and French reinforcements were now arriving in considerable numbers, and Ludendorff would have been prudent to rest on his laurels.
