We must make up our minds to overcome our scruples and fears. If in discussing the aeroplane, we were to speak of nothing but of the number of aviators who have been killed, we would never accept that invention. We must embark in one in order to prove to ourselves that our fears and apprehensions are unfounded.

Keep near the place where these rockets were fired, Dave. Now then, what do you think?" Dave slowed down. There was certainly something to his companion's surmises or suspicions, whatever they were. Directly at the spot whence the rockets had been fired there now suddenly flared up a great reach of flames. Watching these, the interested aviators saw them change to a reddish hue.

"If those Huns only act as decently toward us as we do toward them, we'll have some news soon." For it is true, in a number of instances that the German aviators do drop within the allied lines news of any British, French or American birdman who is captured or killed inside the German lines. "All ready?" asked Tom of his helper. "Switch off, gas on," was the answer.

Owing to the daring of the French and British aviators the German flyers were literally prohibited from the lines of the Allies during all that time. In five days fifteen German machines were brought to the ground. Very few German balloons even attempted to take the air. On June 24, 1916, the bombardment of German trenches had reached the highest pitch of intensity.

All of this and much more the engineer has brought to twentieth-century warfare, and the grim fact remains that trained masses are used, made and destroyed in vain attempts at an object often unknown to the individual. Accordingly, when we turn to the work of the aviators we pass back from the consideration of the mass to the individual.

Unfortunately the French, owing to their decision to rule out certain machines as unsuited to military service, have not yet perfected their organisation for making good this wastage, although latterly it has been appreciably reduced by greater care among the aviators in handling their vessels. The fast vessels of the French aerial fleet have proved exceptionally valuable.

The great flight had been carried through, and here they were landed on the soil of America, three young aviators who but a few days before had been serving their country on the fighting-front in Northern France.

The aviators told off for this duty are attached to the staff of the Commander-in-Chief, and the work has to be carried out upon a far more comprehensive and elaborate scale, while the airmen are called upon to penetrate well into the hostile territory to a point thirty, forty, or more miles beyond the outposts.

Far overhead, circling grandly on effortless, still, great pinions, swimming, one might say, in the dome of the sky, a big bird, known as a buzzard, was staring downwards with the flashing, sheathed glance of all birds of prey and aviators at the world below. She, too, had young, and simply had to find a meal. The hour was late, and her success nil. Perhaps that accounted for much.

They had been in the air about twice the time set for endurance by noted aviators. They did not get much of a chance to stretch their legs, however, for they bumped into a squad of soldiers on stepping out of their seats. "You are under arrest!" a gaily-dressed officer said, flashing his sword out of its scabbard. "What for?" demanded Ned, speaking in Spanish. "Smuggling!" was the reply.
