"The method I employed was to take a little of the blood and add some oxalate of ammonium to it, then shake it up thoroughly with ether to free the hemoglobin from the corpuscles. I then separated the ether carefully from the rest of the blood mixture and put a few drops of it on a slide, covered them with a cover slip and sealed the edges with balsam.

When, finally, a precipitation of aluminum oxide takes place the liquid is almost free from iron. From time to time, the solution, in which the aluminum oxide is suspended, is tested for iron by ammonium sulphide, and the current is interrupted when no further reaction is observed. The hot solution is then directly submitted to the action of the electric current.

The calculi in this case consisted chiefly of phosphate of magnesium and ammonium. Cordier of Kansas City, Mo., successfully removed a renal calculus weighing over three ounces from a woman of forty-two. The accompanying illustration shows the actual size of the calculus. At the University College Hospital, London, there are exhibited 485 gall-stones that were found postmortem in a gall-bladder.

The most important properties of these hydroxides, from a quantitative standpoint, other than those mentioned, are the following: All are precipitable by the hydroxides of sodium and potassium, but always inclose some of the precipitant, and should be reprecipitated with ammonium hydroxide before ignition to oxides.

In our experiments, an excess of ammonium oxalate was added to a nitric acid solution of bismuth. During the electrolytic decomposition, a separation of the peroxide was observed at the positive electrode, which, however, slowly disappeared. In order to prevent the reduced metal from oxidation, the last traces of water are completely removed by repeated washings with alcohol and anhydrous ether.

If we now add a little ammonium sulphide to this solution, we get the spectrum of reduced hæmoglobin, which is a single broad absorption band situated in the interval between the preceding oxyhæmoglobin bands. By shaking the solution, oxyhæmoglobin is again reproduced, and gives its special absorption bands.

To those interested in the electro deposition of nickel upon zinc, the formula given below for a solution and a brief explanation of its use will be of service. The first sample of this solution was made as an experiment to see what substances could be added to a solution of the double sulphate of nickel and ammonium without spoiling it.

"Filaments of carbon placed in a combustion tube with a little chloride ammonium.

This indicator cannot, however, be successfully used with weak bases, even ammonium hydroxide; for, since it is weak acid, the salts which it forms with weak alkalies are easily hydrolyzed, and as a consequence of this hydrolysis the change of color is not sharp. This indicator is affected by even so weak an acid as carbonic acid, which must be removed by boiling the solution before titration.
