When the amount of manganese is small, the separation of the two elements takes place very rapidly, and the results are accurate. If the amount of manganese is more than double that of iron, the separation of the latter will take a much longer time. As has been already mentioned in the determination of manganese as peroxide, its precipitation from ammonium oxalate is not complete.

Test a portion of the last washing with a dilute solution of ammonium sulphide to assure complete removal of the zinc. The precipitate may then be ignited and weighed as ferric oxide, as described on page 110. PROCEDURE. Acidify the filtrate from the iron determination with dilute nitric acid. Concentrate it to 150 cc. It is important that this point should not be overstepped.

Treatment. The most valuable drugs for the treatment of the manifestations of the tertiary period are the arsenical preparations and the iodides of sodium and potassium. On account of their depressing effects, the latter are frequently prescribed along with carbonate of ammonium. The dose is usually a matter of experiment in each individual case; 5

As urea is converted into ammonium carbonate in the first stage of the action of the ferment, a supply of salifiable base would at first be present, but would gradually be consumed. The result of the experiment showed that only one-half the quantity of nitric acid was formed in the simple urine solution as in similar solutions containing calcium and sodium carbonate.

We have plunged this into the bath, which contains chiefly nitrate of silver, but also some iodide of silver, knowing that a decomposition will take place, in consequence of which the iodide of ammonium will become changed to the iodide of silver, which will now fill the pores of the collodion film. The iodide of silver is eminently sensitive to light.

Kolloide!, 10 , 132-146. A good grade of material should be secured. It can be successfully used for the titration of hydrochloric, nitric, sulphuric, phosphoric, and sulphurous acids, and is particularly useful in the determination of bases, such as sodium, potassium, barium, calcium, and ammonium hydroxides, and even many of the weak organic bases.

To prepare the solution for this determination, which should be approximately 0.05 N, dissolve about 5 grams of potassium thiocyanate, or 4 grams of ammonium thiocyanate, in a small amount of water; dilute this solution to 1000 cc. in a liter bottle and mix as usual. About 5 cc. of this solution should be used as an indicator.

The Peruvian borax sometimes contains nitre. For testing the purity of refined borax the following simple tests will usually suffice. On passing sulphuretted hydrogen into the solution, no coloration or precipitate should be produced. Calcium Salts. The solution should not give a precipitate with ammonium oxalate solution. Carbonates.

The other was composed of the same amount of the silicate with six drops of dilute phosphoric acid and six grains of ammonium phosphate. He filled sterilised tubes, sealed them hermetically, and heated them to 125 or 145 degrees, Centigrade, although 60 or 70 degrees would have killed any bacteria remaining in them. Next he exposed them to sunlight in a south window for from two to four months.

The jelly is prepared by mixing a solution of chloride of ammonium with "agar-agar," or Ceylon moss. This type permits the use of larger plates, and adapts the battery for lighting small electric lamps.
