This work and these centers offer the greatest possibilities in the Americanization scheme, perfection of which is a paramount duty for this country.

With the full and direct co-operation of the Federal Bureau of Americanization, the material was assembled and worked up with the result that, in the opinion of the director of the Federal Bureau, the series proved to be the most comprehensive exposition of practical Americanization adapted to city, town, and village, thus far published.

This article further points out the inevitability of innumerable perversions of Americanization in such an orgy of organization. The article says on this point: "Every political party has its hangers-on who, consciously or unconsciously, discredit the fine principles of that party by their erroneous expounding of these.

But to the foreign-born they seem distinct lacks; they loom large; they form serious handicaps which, in many cases, are never surmounted; they are a menace to that Americanization which is, to-day, more than ever our fondest dream, and which we now realize more keenly than before is our most vital need.

But Indian agents and trading houses needed the protection and administrative arm of the military department in order to be effective. The forward movement of the military frontier during the years succeeding the war is significant as marking a trend towards the Americanization of a great region.

In a new country, peopled in two hundred and fifty years by immigrants from the Old World and their descendants, the process of Americanization is not limited by any hard and fast rules as to time and generations, but is altogether a matter of individual and race temperament.

First, it is psychologically bad to approach Americanization work through a super-organized and much-trumpeted movement, because such a policy warns the foreigner in advance that a crowd of superior persons have set out to improve him. That is generally resented.

"Why not an institution for the study and promotion of patriotism research in the fields of social and industrial life that are peculiarly American lectures, classes, and literature on the true Americanization of those who come to us from foreign countries the promotion of true American principles and standards of citizenship in our public schools and educational institutions and among our people the collection and study of authentic data from the many industrial and social experiments that are being carried on these are some of the proposed activities."

When a foreign pupil with little knowledge of the English language enters an American school the native-born boys and girls in that school can accomplish a useful service in Americanization by helping the newcomer, thus giving him a true idea of American fairness at the start.

We will, therefore, let Edward Bok answer these questions for himself, in closing this record of his Americanization. When I came to the United States as a lad of six, the most needful lesson for me, as a boy, was the necessity for thrift. I had been taught in my home across the sea that thrift was one of the fundamentals in a successful life. Where the Dutchman saved, the American wasted.
