We will, therefore, let Edward Bok answer these questions for himself, in closing this record of his Americanization. XXXVIII. Where America Fell Short with Me When I came to the United States as a lad of six, the most needful lesson for me, as a boy, was the necessity for thrift. I had been taught in my home across the sea that thrift was one of the fundamentals in a successful life.
The work on this series was one of the last acts of Edward Bok's editorship; and it was peculiarly gratifying to him that his editorial work should end with the exposition of that Americanization of which he himself was a product. It seemed a fitting close to the career of a foreign-born Americanized editor.
Edward now felt that his Americanization had begun; but, always believing that a thing begun must be carried to a finish, he took, or gave it depends upon the point of view two or three more lessons in this particular phase of Americanization before he convinced these American schoolboys that it might be best for them to call a halt upon further excursions in torment.
"To penetrate these barriers and open new avenues of communication with the people who live within them is no longer a task to be performed by individual effort. Americanization is a work that must be undertaken and directed on a scale so extensive that only through the cooperation of the States and the Federal Government can it be successfully carried out.
"Ah, my friend, you haven't got the inside news," said still another Raoul lingered to hear him "Louisiana is going to state her wants! We have the liberty of free speech and are going to use it!" His information was correct; Louisiana, no longer incredulous of her Americanization, had laid hold of her new liberties and was beginning to run with them, like a boy dragging his kite over the clods.
Yet this man was a power in his community, a strong influence upon others; he believed he could Americanize others, when he himself, according to his own statements, lacked the fundamental principle of Americanization. What is true of this man is, in lesser or greater degree, true of hundreds of others.

The figures are based on the test which defines an Illiterate as one having no schooling whatever. Remembering the wide freedom of our public schools with compulsory attendance in many States in the Union, one is convinced that much of our excessive illiteracy comes to us from abroad, and the education of the immigrant becomes it requisite to his Americanization.
It would be a sturdy prop in his long sensitive, susceptible physical recovery and afterward. Was it really not a kind of duty to try to save her from sharing the fate of Von Tielitz, and win her if he could? The Americanization of the Bucher home Kirtley naturally thought beyond all attempts.
Bok went to Washington, consulted with Franklin K. Lane, secretary of the interior, of whose department the Government Bureau of Americanization was a part.
