To "go a-Maying" is in fact the principal ceremony of the day wherever kept, and for whatever reason.
Nick trotted on sturdily, holding her hand, and butting his shoulder against the crowd so that she might not be jostled; for the press grew thick and thicker as they went. All London was a-Maying, and the foreigners from Soho, too.
Often in the good old days before the Monk-king reigned, kings and ealdermen had thus gone forth a-maying; but these merriments, savouring of heathenesse, that good prince misliked: nevertheless the song was as blithe, and the boughs were as green, as if king and ealderman had walked in the train.
The falling sun found the wreath completed and the verse learned, and the two went hand in hand back through the shadowy garden. "Won't you make music to-day?" Kirk begged. "Not to-day," said the old gentleman. "This day we go a-maying. But I am glad you do not forget the music." "How could I?" said Kirk. At the hedge, he added: "I'd like to put a bit of arbutus in your buttonhole, for your May."
So I descended to the sitting-room, and finding nobody there, proceeded to the barn, whence I had already heard Zenobia's voice, and along with it a girlish laugh which was not so certainly recognizable. Arriving at the spot, it a little surprised me to discover that these merry outbreaks came from Priscilla. The two had been a-maying together.
So upon the morn they took their horses with the queen, and rode a-maying in woods and meadows, as it pleased them, in great joy and delight. Now there was a knight named Maleagans, son to King Brademagus, who loved Queen Guenever passing well, and so had he done long and many years.
And so at that time Sir Launcelot had the greatest name of any knight of the world, and most was he honored of high and low. "For thus it chanced one morn when all the court, Green-suited, but with plumes that mock'd the May, Had been, their wont, a-maying" Guinevere.
She could understand that; and Villon's famous verses, "Ou sont les neiges d'antan?" were as familiar to her as Herrick's "Come, my Corinna, let us go a-maying." But, on the whole, she was strangely and poorly equipped for the battle of life.

Oh! you know all about it, everybody knows that it is just as sure to rain on a May morning, as it is to thaw when your schoolmaster attempts to treat himself and you to a sleigh-ride on your hoarded ninepences! So take my advice and turn your back on May she is a fickle little gypsey. Ask the first Irishman you meet if June isn't the month to go a-Maying?
