But as soon as our guns were securely switched off on to a false target, the enemy showed his hand. His guns ceased to play on the 56th Division and were directed with extreme violence against our front. It was then 12.30 a.m. on the morning of May 16th; the raid had begun.

They had, therefore, applied to the British Government for a further grant of land; and the report of Captain Martin having been so highly favourable, all obstructions were removed, and next year the order which had been granted by the Prince Regent in Council, 13th May 1818, securing to them the possession of the coast from Okkak to the 56th deg N.L., including the bays of Napartok, Kangertluksoak, and Saeglak, was transmitted to Nain through Governor Hamilton, accompanied by a letter written under his own hand, wishing them every success in their Christian undertaking.

He could go no further; the members pressed round him: but, old as he then was, for he had reached his 56th year, he little dreamed that he was destined to outlive almost all of those young and gallant spirits that then loved and greeted him.

These are the figures officers, noncommissioned officers, and men artillery, 485; 12th Regiment, 599; 39th, 586; 56th, 587; 58th, 605; 72nd, 1046; the Hanoverian Brigade of Hardenberg's, Reden's, and De la Motte's regiments 1352; and 122 Engineers under Colonel Green: which makes up, altogether, 5382 officers and men.

The Staffords and the Sherwood Foresters were going to do the attack with their right on the Sucrerie, their left on the "Z," while the 56th Division on our right would attack the village from the S.E. The Park, most of the village, and the Chateau would thus not be directly attacked, but it was hoped that the two Divisions would meet on the East side, and so cut off large numbers of Germans in the isolated area.

They wanted to find out where a clergyman lived, an' I couldn't tell them not about the Protestant Episcopal, I mean, my lord but the driver of the taxi remembered that there was a minister of that persuasion living in 56th Street, near 7th Avenue, an' next door to a church. So they made a bee-line that-a-way, my lord, an' I went to see to the furnace, an' that's all there is to it, my lord."

Q. "Where do you live, Mrs. Lucas?" A. "At 26 East 56th Street, New York City." Q. "I shall have to ask you some questions that are necessarily painful at this time. I shall be as brief as possible. Perhaps it will be easier for you to tell so much as you know of what happened the night before last at the Clark ranch." A. "I cannot tell very much. I am confused, too.

Other Germans came closing in like wolves, in packs, and to a German officer who said, "Surrender!" our men shouted, "No surrender!" and fought in Thiepval Wood until most were dead and only a few wounded crawled out to tell that tale. The Londoners of the 56th Division had no luck at all.
