Francis Spira, in 1548, being a lawyer in great repute in Italy, professed gospel principles, but afterwards relapsed into Popery, and became a victim of black despair. The man in the iron cage, at the Interpreter's house, probably referred to Spira. The narrative of his fearful state is preceded by a poem: 'Here see a soul that's all despair, a man All hell, a spirit all wounds.

In the spring of 1548 a common Communion Service in English was added to the solitary Mass of the priest; an English book of Common Prayer, the Liturgy which with slight alterations is still used in the Church of England, soon replaced the Missal and Breviary from which its contents are mainly drawn. The name "Common Prayer," which was given to the new Liturgy, marked its real import.

"What special circumstances occurred on the wedding-day?" "At midnight exactly, our neighbour, Catherine Boere, brought us the repast which is known as 'medianoche. This woman has recognised me, as also our old Marguerite, who has remained with us ever since the wedding." "What is the date of your son's birth?" "February 10, 1548, nine years after our marriage.

This convention, which in reality severed the shadowy links which had hitherto bound the Netherlands to the empire, received the sanction of the States-General in October, 1548; and it was followed by the issuing, with the consent of the Estates of the various provinces, of a "Pragmatic Sanction" by which the inherited right of succession to the sovereignty in each and every province was settled upon the male and female line of Charles' descendants, notwithstanding the existence of ancient provincial privileges to the contrary.

Exeter, indeed, only once lost the church of Bosham, and that in a most glorious cause, the cause of St Thomas. In 1548 the college was suppressed, only one priest being left to serve the church, with a curate to serve the dependent parish of Appledram. The church, as we have it to-day upon a little sloping green hill over the water, is of the very greatest interest.

This, of course, is the statute which Herbert Spencer cites as making a "third conviction for joining a trades-union punished with loss of an ear"; but he places the date at 1535 instead of 1548.

In January 1548 leaving these islands, they came in sight of certain other islands, from which the natives came off to them, in a kind of boats, bearing crosses in their hands, and they saluted the mariners in the Spanish language, saying, Buenos dias Matelotes, or, good day companions.

When, in the year 1548, the connection of the Netherlands with the German empire was to be settled at the Diet of Augsburg, Charles V. sent hither this statesman to manage the interests of the provinces; and his ability principally succeeded in turning the negotiations to the advantage of the Netherlands.
