From 1492, the discovery of Hispaniola, to 1502, the short space of but four years, such was the mortality among the natives, that the Spaniards then holding rule there, "began to employ a few" Africans in the mines of the Island. The experiment was effective a successful one. The Indian and African were enslaved together, when the Indian sunk, and the African stood.

Finally, Queen Isabella and her husband, King Ferdinand, led their Christian army to victory against the last Moorish stronghold, Granada. Because of this victory, Queen Isabella didn't have to worry about fighting for a while, and she was able to help Columbus. When Columbus discovered America on October 12, 1492, he began Spain's most exciting period of history.

At Pinos we saw the stone bridge where, in 1492, Columbus, on his way to France, disheartened by his failure to interest King Ferdinand in his plans, was over-taken by Queen Isabella's messenger and summoned back to court to receive his commission.

Not the ball we see now, which was struck by lightning and hurled into the street in 1492. Verrocchio's was rather smaller than the present ball. See Crowe and Cavalcaselle, History of Painting in Italy: London, 1903, p. 116, note 4. See pp. 283-289.

Although she spoke of State prison, it was always found she knew the name and the location of the hospital, the names of people around her, even the date approximately, though she was apt to say it was February 19, 1492, or October 19, 1492, or when the year was not given as 1492 she said it was1900 or 1901, or 1911 or 1912.” Frequently, however, it was hard to hold her attention.

Then I said that although America is so fresh and blooming that people persist in calling it young, it is much older than it appears to the superficial eye. There is no real propriety in dating us as a nation from the Declaration of Independence in 1776, I said, nor even from the landing of the Pilgrims in 1620; nor, for that matter, from Columbus's discovery in 1492.

Spain has other proud cities besides Madrid. Two, whose history goes way back to the days of the Moors, are Granada and Toledo. Granada is the city in Andalusia which the Moors loved most and held longest. They fought hard to keep it, and when they finally surrendered it to Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492 they wept bitterly, for it seemed to them they had lost a Paradise.

While Columbus was suspecting that the north star was somewhat wilfully shifting from the magnetic pole, now to a distance ofand then of 10°, the calculations of modern astronomers have gauged the polar distance existing in 1492 at28´, as against the20´ of to-day.

Two of them were light, half-decked caravels; the Santa Maria, on which Columbus hoisted his flag, was completely decked. The whole number of persons was one hundred and twenty. Columbus set sail on August 3, 1492, steering for the Canary Islands. From there they were wafted gently over a tranquil sea by the trade wind, and for many days did not change a sail.

The sight of the broad harbor, under such circumstances, lying with its flickering, shimmering surface under the afternoon sun, is very beautiful to behold. The island of Cuba was discovered by Columbus, in October of the year 1492; the continent of America was not discovered until six years later, that is, in 1498.
