My mental disharmony is indescribable; sometimes I stare at my paper for days together, without remembrance or thought or liking for my work. Where is that liking to spring from? All the motive power which, for a time, I derived from my dreary solitude is gradually losing its force. Such disharmony of the social life of course exists also in America. We are highly individualistic in our mode of life, as is shown both in domestic and in public affairs. If the disharmony involve an instinct, an emotion or certain phases of the intelligence, we are brought face to face with the abnormal.
