In due time he was despatched to Cadiz to join the convict gangs sentenced to enforced labour at Ceuta. The whole garrison of Seville was kept under arms on the morning of his departure, to suppress any popular commotion, and resist any possible attempt at rescue.

In 1415 John II of Portugal, partly to give his five sons opportunity to win knighthood in battle, attacked and captured the Moorish stronghold of Ceuta, facing Gibraltar across the strait.
On the Mediterranean, Ceuta, which had belonged to Portugal, came under the rule of Spain when those countries were united, and the Spaniards hold it still, as they do less important positions further east. The piracy days of the Moors have long passed, but they only ceased at the last moment they could do so with grace, before the introduction of steamships.
