On the fifth day of March, 1873, John Hontvet, his brother Mathew, and Ivan Christensen set sail in John's little schooner, the Clara Bella, to draw their trawls.

The fishing was various. Soles, whiting, and haddock were the principal fish brought up in the trawls; but there was occasionally a big skate or two in the net, and these had to be handled with considerable circumspection, as they could take off a finger or two with the greatest ease with their powerful jaws and sharp teeth.

The boat rolled and pitched on the old swell, making him a trifle seasick. A wave of disgust swept over him. This was no place for the son of a millionaire. He wished himself back on the land. By the time they reached Tarpaulin, at about half past four, all the six trawls were baited. "We won't set them till day after to-morrow," determined Jim.

"I'm done with you for good," he said. As Lane and Spurling started for the Barracouta to dress the fifteen hundred pounds of hake they had taken off the trawls that morning Percy joined them, clad in oilskins. "Jim," he petitioned, "I want you to teach me how to split fish." "Do you mean it, Percy?" asked Spurling. "You heard what I said this noon about shirking.

What could one have expected to learn of the secrets of life in the ocean depths from the small creatures which alone the trawls brought to the surface? The great monsters could not be captured in that way. But we have seen them seen them taking possession of beautiful, drowned Paris and we know what they are."
