All this we find in the text; but in the clear intellect of this man of genius a vast number of intervening difficulties started up, and in a copious note the numerous exceptions show that the assumed theory requires no other refutation than what the theorist has himself so abundantly and so judiciously supplied.
'Do you remember, the statesman, soldier and orator continued, 'a young and handsome Mississippian, a member of Congress, by the name of Lamar? She said she didn't." I rather think that Lamar was the biggest brained of all the men I have met in Washington. He possessed the courage of his convictions. A doctrinaire, there was nothing of the typical doctrinaire, or theorist, about him.
It must have been so, otherwise the beast would have had no motive for helping the hero, and, it may be added, the theorist would have had no ground for claiming the story as proceeding from a Buddhist source. Now all this would have been seen at once to be very poor reasoning, but for one fact.
This indefatigable theorist never neglected the applications of science: the nature and the changes of the layers which form the under earth; the course and the depth of the subterraneous sheets of water; the mineralogical composition of the earth's vegetation, were represented by him on several charts and plans drawn out in proper form.
Whatever there was of wisdom in his view, he spoilt it for English hearing, by making use of his dry compressed sentences. Besides he was a bachelor; therefore but a theorist. And his illustrations of his theory were grotesque; meditation on them extracted a corrosive acid to consume, in horrid derision, the sex, the nation, the race of man.
Doncaster, a dunce Stratford, a miser Coleman, a knave Naresby, non compos Skreene, the most corrupt of the corrupt Twisselton, puzzle headed Waltham, a mere theorist Wrexfield, a speechifier Chelsea, a trimmer Lancaster, deep and dark Sir Thomas Cope, a wit, a poet, and a fool Sir James Skipworth, finance and finesse Arnold, able and active and Oldfield, a diplomatist in grain.
For it is this plurality of contact that vitalizes, and he who has not drawn his universals of character out of the particulars of everyday life is a cloistered theorist, aloof from reality. The history of Man's thought is the real history of mankind. Back of all the events of history are the curious systems of beliefs for which men have lived and died.
His master was prepared promptly to reinforce him; Constantinople was perhaps nearer its fall in 1828 than in 1878, and certainly Diebitch was much smarter than were the Grand Duke Nicholas, his fossil Nepokoitschitsky, and his pure theorist Levitsky. The contrast between the character of our own contemporary military operations and that of those of the smooth-bore era is very strongly marked.
This exclusive regard to knowledge was his one-sidedness as a moral theorist; but he did not consistently exclude all reference to the voluntary control of appetite and passion. IV. He inculcated Practical Precepts of a self-denying kind, intended to curb the excesses of human desire and ambition.
And, anyhow, Bolshevism had the advantage that it had not yet been tried in this country, and no one, not even the most imaginative and clear-sighted political theorist, could forecast the precise form into which the curious British climate might mould it if it should ever adopt it. But the W.E.A. was a practical body, which went in for practical adventure.
