The above important statement concerning the distinction between the "abnormal" and "supernormal" is not made merely for the purpose of academic differentiation and classification. The Prevailing Ignorance

The law supports the opposition of the Church and frowns on the practice of mediumship and clairvoyance. The law denies the possibility of spirit intercourse and forbids the exercise of supernormal faculties in exploring the untrodden realms of the future.

To this I was forced to agree. I here definitely declare that the psychic was not concerned with the flight of the cone in any way known to biology. If she produced the voices, they too must have been examples of supernormal ventriloquism, for they came through the megaphone. Of that I am as certain as one can be of an auditory impression.

Now, first, anthropology has taken for granted that the Supreme Deities of savages are envisaged by them as 'spirits. This, paradoxical as the statement may appear, is just what does not seem to be proved, as we shall show. But the inferences drawn by materialists who reject the supernormal phenomena will also, perhaps, be, let us say, incomplete.

If cows sickened and died, it was because a "spell" had been cast over them; and so on and so on. The superstitions of witchcraft were as innumerable as they were extraordinary. Are there any facts, amid all this superstition and ignorance, tending to show that genuine supernormal phenomena ever occurred at all? And if so, what are they?

If one single prophecy, clairvoyant vision, telepathic impulse, or mediumistic message be true if veritable supernormal information be thereby conveyed then psychical research is a science, and illimitable avenues are opened up for further research and speculation. More especially is this true in the case of mediumistic messages.

On such a plane of existence, the occasional individual who was born possessed of the powers of sight and hearing, respectively, would be properly regarded as "SUPERNORMAL," that is to say, such a person would be SUPERIOR to the ordinary run of individuals above them, in fact.

While I admit freely that a very large percentage of such phenomena are so produced, and while I freely admit that probably 98 per cent of so-called "mediums" are fraudulent; I am equally emphatic in declaring that a residuum of genuine phenomena exists that supernormal manifestations do occur, and that every one who investigates carefully enough and long enough will find them.

Magic and religion, according to the view I would support, belong to the same department of human experience one of the two great departments, the two worlds, one might almost call them, into which human experience, throughout its whole history, has been divided. Together they belong to the supernormal world, the x-region of experience, the region of mental twilight.

On the other hand, the "OUTSIDE of the standard" quality may consist of a SUPERIORITY to the prevailing standard, and accordingly is entitled to be classed in the category of the "SUPERnormal" the prefix "SUPER" meaning "ABOVE, OVER, HIGHER, etc." It is important that the distinction be made clearly between the use and meaning of these two terms, "abnormal" and "supernormal," respectively.
