Yet, had it been his humour, he could have played the showman to Michael Angelo and Blake at least as well as to Bewick, Stothard, or Chodowiecki. But a modesty, marvellously mingled with irony, was of the very essence of his nature. No man expatiated less. James Boyer see below. "Peter Wilkins," etc. The Adventures of Peter Wilkins, by Robert Paltock, 1751, is still read; but The Voyages and Adventures of Captain Robert Boyle, 1736, has had its day. Great efforts have been made by the most popular artists to enliven the scenes of the pilgrimage; but no colour glows like the enchanting words of Bunyan. No figures are so true to nature, and so life-like. Those eminent engravers, Sturt and Strut, Stothard and Martin, with the prize efforts excited by the Art Union of England, and the curious outlines by Mrs.
His pictures one in particular, the Canterbury Pilgrims, far above Stothard have great merit, but hard, dry, yet with grace. The book-case is painted by Stothard, in his very best manner, with groups from Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Boccacio. The pictures are not numerous; but every one is excellent. In the dining-room there are also some beautiful paintings.
"The designs," his biographer says, "can hardly be pronounced a successful competition with Stothard, though traces of a higher feeling are visible in the graceful female forms, benevolent heroine, or despairing, famishing peasant group.
His "Rip Van Winkle" and "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" are pictures, in which we find combined the handling of Teniers, the refinement of Stothard, and the coloring of Gainsborough. Fortunate in so many other things, Irving may also be pronounced fortunate in his biographer, whom he himself designated for the trust.
