"I was just thinking how awfully slow things must be for the poor shut-ins " "What?" demanded Herb curiously. Bob frowned. It bothered him to be interrupted, especially when it was hard to express what he felt. "Shut-ins," he repeated impatiently. "People who can't get out and have fun like us fellows." "Oh, you mean cripples like Joel Banks," said Herb with relief.
We knew it would cost like hell, but we knew it was a great thing to do. Not another nation on earth would have gone in for that reason. That's the trouble with you poor little shut-ins; you decide the country hasn't any ideals because someone runs a stockyard out in Chicago or a foundry in Pittsburgh. God help you people if you'd had your way about the war!
Gayly the four boys started off in the two cars, eager to pick up the poor shut-ins of their acquaintance and give them the time of their lives. Their first stop was at the lonely little cottage of Joel Banks, Civil War veteran. His housekeeper let them in, a quaint little woman with pink cheeks and white hair and a spotless white apron tied around her comfortable waist.
The singing usually broke out just after the guards had made an unsuccessful attempt to pull the bedclothes off some of the boys who had determined to stay in bed all day; and when the few docile ones had departed for the peat bog, the "shut-ins" grew joyful to the point of singing. This was a hot favorite: "O Germany, O Germany; Your fate is sealed upon the sea.
No one was allowed to run such risks alone, as, in case of a fall, the chances would be against getting up again without help, but parties of twos and threes of the young men went to the barns to look after the cattle or up to the Eyrie, the Cottage and Pilgrim Hall to see that all was right and to bring down a sled-load of bedding for the shut-ins.
This told of a young girl claiming to be a girl scout, running off with a lot of ticket money, the funds she had obtained by pretending to assist an entertainment being conducted for the benefit of the Violet Circle of Shut-ins. That a girl scout should rob cripples! And that a clue should lead back to Flosston, inferring the culprit might belong in that town!
"Mother used to put salt in the water to keep flowers fresh," she said, "and oh, won't it be lovely to carry these around to the shut-ins, tomorrow, Theo! I think Mrs. Hunt would like some," she added. "All right. Pick out what you like an' take 'em in to her now." Nan selected some of the freshest blossoms and went across with them to her neighbour, leaving Theo with the baby, who was asleep.
