Some years ago, I cannot say just how many, probably twelve or fourteen, during the days when I led, or thought I led, a nomadic life, happening to be in San Sebastian, I went to visit the Museum with the painter Regoyos.

It is very easy to talk of repentance; but a man has to walk over hot ploughshares before he can complete it; to be skinned alive as was St Bartholomew; to be stuck full of arrows as was St Sebastian; to lie broiling on a gridiron like St Lorenzo! How if his past life required such repentance as this? had he the energy to go through with it?

Sebastian The queen's curiosity A royal banquet The consequences. I had some more amusing experiences on the occasion of my first visit to the royal palace.

"Yes, replacing books with wines and liquors! What a business for the sons of Saint Ignatius!" In spite of all its display, all its tinsel, all its Jesuitism, all its bad taste, San Sebastian will become an important, dignified city within a very few years.

During the long struggle with the Libertines occurred also Calvin's controversies with Sebastian Castellio, Jerome Bolsec, and above all, Michael Servetus. After the execution of Servetus, and the expulsion of the Libertines two years later, Calvin's power in Geneva was firmly established, and he used it vigorously and beneficently for the defence of Protestantism throughout Europe.

The arrest was made in the usual manner, and the captors behaved with the customary naval courtesy. They were over-joyed at their good fortune, and gave their prisoners to eat and to drink champagne to the officers and chacoli to the men. They towed their prize into the bay of St. Sebastian, and there was triumph.

By the middle of the eighteenth century the musical life of Europe was in full swing. Then there came forward a man who was greater than all others, a simple organist of the Thomas Church of Leipzig, by the name of Johann Sebastian Bach.

The man was, indeed, thus occupied when the old priest opened the door of his room. 'Yes, he answered in a thick voice, 'I am Sebastian of Xeres, and no other; the man who knows more of the Carlist plots than any other in Madrid. 'Can you read? 'No. 'Then you know nothing, said the Padre. 'You have, however, a letter in a pink envelope which a friend of mine desires to possess.

Don Rafael must have been a man of modern sympathies, for he bought a printing press and began to issue pamphlets and even occasional books. Evidently Don Rafael was also a man of radical ideas. He published a newspaper at San Sebastian in 1822 and 1823, which he called El Liberal Guipuzcoano. I have seen only one copy of this, and that was in the National Library.

In the latter part of the sixteenth century, after Don Sebastian had fallen in the ill-fated expedition to Morocco, Philip the Second of Spain took advantage of the failure of the male line on the death of the cardinal-king, Henry, to add Portugal to his dominions, already too large.
