Well, there’s the High-peak and the Round-top, which lay back like a father and mother among their children, seeing they are far above all the other hills.

The valley fairly bristled with the promptness of it the skilled directness of the message, so rapidly, so spontaneously given that the poised Lightning on the crag was hard-pressed to keep up with the meaning to read the handwriting of fire and give the interpretation thereof. Old Round-top had seized the shining hour.

"It is unpleasant to be suspected of a crime, and revolting to the instincts of a gentleman," added Laud. "Do you mean to say that I am suspected of a crime, you long-eared puppy?" yelled the captain. "I beg your pardon, Captain Shivernock, but it isn't agreeable to a gentleman to be called by such opprobrious names," said Laud, rising from his chair, and taking his round-top hat from the table.

Harkye, harkye, brother, d ned hard to engage with three at a time, one upon my bow, one upon my quarter, and one right a-head, rubbing and drubbing, lying athwart hawse, raking fore and aft, battering and grappling, and lashing and clashing adds heart, brother; crash went the bolt-sprit down came the round-top up with the deadlights I saw nothing but the stars at noon, lost the helm of my seven senses, and down I broached upon my broadside."

They had experienced some strange adventures while in camp, most of which hinged upon an event that had taken place in Carson one windy night, when the big round-top of a visiting circus blew down in a sudden gale, and many of the menagerie animals were set free.

The mountains were falling asleep in their night-caps of mist. But suddenly one of them, far away, grim and dim, lifted an eyelid and responded. The drowsy valley caught its breath as old Round-top winked back. Caught its breath with many a waking scintilla of light in the pointed flash of pool and stream!

And yet here was our little sub full speed and all heading straight into high-curling seas and making fine weather of it. Plunging her bow under, and through she'd go; and when she did the seas would go swashing up atop of her make-believe deck and come rolling down her round-top plates and squishing through the hundreds of round holes in her deck sides. But steady?

In the midst of this stubborn conflict, the Vigilant and a sloop-of-war were brought up the inner channel, between Mud and Province Islands, which had, unobserved by the besieged, been deepened by the current in consequence of the obstructions in the main channel, and, taking a station within 100 yards of the works, not only kept up a destructive cannonade, but threw hand-grenades into them, while the musketeers from the round-top of the Vigilant killed every man that appeared on the platform.
