If we compare the old-style acting of The School for Scandal, that is described in the essays of Lamb, with the modern performance of Sweet Kitty Bellairs, which dealt with the same period, we shall see at once how modern acting has grown less presentative and more representative than it was in the days of Bensley and Bannister.
It has, strictly speaking, nothing to do with the question of the legitimacy or validity of any mental act. Take a percept, for example. Psychology can trace its parentage in sensation, the mode in which it has come by its contents in the laws of association. But by common consent, a percept implies a presentative apprehension of an object now present to sense. Is this valid or illusory?
We must, of course, all allow that the fusion of the presentative and the representative element is, speaking generally, more complete in the case of sense-perception than in that here considered.

The conclusion which we would deduce from the whole of the foregoing remarks is, that the great law of living sensation, the rationale of sensation as a living process, is this, that the senses are not merely presentative i.e. they not only bring sensations before us, but that they are self-presentative i.e. they, moreover, bring themselves before us as sensations.
The second step in this process of presentative construction is the recognition of an object as one of a class of things, for example, oranges, having certain special qualities, as a particular taste.
Representative knowledge, again, falls into two chief divisions. The first of these is Memory, which, though not primary or original, like presentative knowledge, is still regarded as directly or intuitively certain.
