Width of the frontal from the middle of the temporal line on one side to the same point on the opposite...104 = 4.1" 4.5". Length of the frontal from the nasal. process to the coronal suture...133 = 5.25" 5". Extreme width of the frontal sinuses...25 = 1.0" 0.9". Vertical height above a line joining the deepest notches in the squamous border of the parietals...70 = 2.75".

They are bounded anteriorly by the frontal bone, posteriorly by the occipital, and laterally by the temporal and sphenoid bones. The two bones make a beautiful arch to aid in the protection of the brain. The temporal bones, forming the temples on either side, are attached to the sphenoid bone in front, the parietals above, and the occipital behind.

II. The head moderately elongated, and the parietals diverging from each other for a certain space as they rise upon the side of the head, enlarging the cerebral cavity and the frontal sinus. To this class belong our most valuable dogs, the Spaniel, Setter, Pointer, Hound, and the Sheep-dog.

It includes almost the whole of the frontal bone, both parietals, a small part of the squamous and the upper-third of the occipital. The recently fractured surfaces show that the skull was broken at the time of its disinterment. The cavity holds 16,876 grains of water, whence its cubical contents may be estimated at 57.64 inches, or 1033.24 cubic centimetres.

Sometimes the crest is double, disposed in parallel ridges, with a deep hollow between; or it is treble, when the two lines of parting running along the mastoids make it remarkably like bears' ears, the central prism rises high, and the side hair is plaited into little pig-tails. Others again train four parallel lines from nape to forehead, forming two cushions along the parietals.

The head moderately elongated, the parietals not approaching from their insertion, but rather diverging, so as to enlarge the cerebral cavities and the frontal sinuses; consequently giving to these dogs greater power of scent and intelligence. They constitute the most pleasing and valuable division of the Dog.

Professor Schaaffhausen, who, with the other experienced zoologists, did not share these doubts, observed that the cranium, which included the frontal bone, both parietals, part of the squamous, and the upper third of the occipital, was of unusual size and thickness, the forehead narrow and very low, and the projection of the supra-orbital ridges enormously great.

Its head "exactly resembled a miniature cow's head;" the occipital bone was absent, the parietals only slightly developed, the eyes were placed at the top of the frontal bone, which was quite flat, with each of its superior angles twisted into a rudimentary horn.

The course of the sagittal suture is grooved, and above the angle of the occipital bone the parietals are depressed. The length of the skull from the nasal process of the frontal over the vertex to the superior semicircular lines of the occipital measures...303 = 12.0". Circumference over the orbital ridges and the superior semicircular lines of the occipital...590 = 23.37" or 23".

Here in the quiet of our study in the country, we wonder if the boys continue as in our day to "create a shout," instead of "making a call," upon their lady acquaintances, if they still use "ponies," if they "group," and get, as we did, "parietals" and "publics" for the same. The police courts contribute their quota.
