After an instructive instance in which "cattle absolutely determine the existence of the Scotch fir," we are referred to cases in which insects determine the existence of cattle: "Perhaps Paraguay offers the most curious instance of this; for here neither cattle, nor horses, nor dogs, have ever run wild, though they swarm southward and northward in a feral state; and Azara and Rengger have shown that this is caused by the greater number in Paraguay of a certain fly, which lays its eggs in the navels of these animals when first born.
Then Moses saw the place called Tit ba-Yawen, in which the sinners stand in mud up to their navels, while the Angels of Destruction lash them with fiery chains, and break their teeth with fiery stones, from morning until evening, and during the night they make their teeth grow again, to the length of a parasang, only to break them anew the next morning.

Pollen is only needed to make seeds, and by the same process to make the fruit set, and Navels do not make seeds, except rarely, nor do they seem to need pollen to make the fruit set. Water and Frost. From how many acres could I keep off a freeze of oranges with 1000 gallons per minute? The water is at 65 degrees.
The Thunder-Animal is also alleged to be fond of eating the human navel; for which reason people should be careful to keep their navels well covered during storms, and to lie down upon their stomachs if possible. Incense is always burned during storms, because the Thunder-Animal hates the smell of incense.
The navels were large, and averaged 5 dozen per case, and the mandarins 10 dozen per case. Mr. C, another district, averaged 6 cases of Valencia Late Oranges, from trees six years planted, and 10 cases per tree from Emperor Mandarins, nine years old. One twelve years old orange-tree in this district produced over 25 cases of fruit. Mr.
Can the Navel orange be grafted on the osage orange? I understand it is done in Florida, and would like to know if it has been tried in California. It cannot. It has not been done in Florida nor anywhere else. The osage orange is not an orange at all. The tree is not a member of the citrus family. No Pollenizer for Navels.
Such buds are not expected to grow until the lowest temperatures of the winter are over. The buds which you speak of as green but still dormant are doing just what they ought to do. They will start when they get ready. Under-pruning of Orange Trees. My Washington Navels have a very heavy crop on the lower limbs, as is usual.
D., same district as last; Washington Navels averaged 10 cases per tree, ten years planted, and have borne regular crops since three years old. Numerous other cases might be given, but the above are sufficient to show the earliness at which our trees bear, and the crops they yield.
This species of liana is celebrated among the Indians, and serves for making baskets and weaving mats. The forests of Sipapo are altogether unknown, and there the missionaries place the nation of the Rayas,* whose mouths are believed to be in their navels. This singular legend has been spread far and wide over the earth.
