The Muhammadan troops attacked Goa in May and after a severe struggle were successful, Albuquerque evacuating the place after decapitating a hundred and fifty of the principal Muhammadans there, and slaughtering their wives and children.
These immediately surrounded the king's palace; but in 1565 the Muhammadans worked their savage will upon them with such effect that only the crumbling ruins of the more massive edifices amongst them still stand.

Where water is not to be had, this ceremony, called tayammum is performed by using sand instead. Lukman is supposed to be the Greek slave Æsop, the author of the Fables. Bu 'Ali Sina is the famous Arab physician and philosopher, by mediæval writers erroneously called Avicenna. Khizr or Khwaja Khizr is the name of a saint or prophet, of great notoriety among the Muhammadans.
The Kos is a measure of distance nearly equal to two English miles, but varying in different provinces. The Muhammadans, after being cured of sickness or wounds, also their women, after recovery from child-bed, always bathe in luke-warm water; which is called the ablution of cure. A mere novice in the language would say that Mir Amman writes "bad grammar" here!
It must be confessed, however, there is so much licentiousness among other classes not only among Hindus, but I am grieved to say among many from our own land, soldiers and others that I can scarcely join in declaring Muhammadans sinners in this respect above all others.
These elegant effusions are of the "Non hominies, non Dî, &c." description. That is to say, he has introduced the elegance and correctness of the Urdu language, or that of the Upper Provinces, into Bengal. The Muhammadans believe that the body of their prophet cast no shadow. Mustafa means "The Chosen," "The Elected," one of Muhammad's titles.
Here is Firishtah's account of what took place. He is speaking of the year A.H. 744, which lasted from May 26, A.D. 1343, to May 15, 1344, and he says that Krishna Naik, son of Rudra Deva of Warangal, went privately to Ballala Deva and urged him to join a combination of Hindus with the view of driving out the Muhammadans from the Dakhan.
The Ballala prince consented, and Krishna Naik promised, when the preparations were complete, to raise all the Hindus of Telingana and place himself at their head. Ballala Deva then built the city of Vijayanagar, raised an army, and the war began. Warangal, then in the hands of the Muhammadans, was reduced, and its governor, Imad-ul-Mulkh, retreated to Daulatabad or Devagiri.
It was seen, too, that there were a number of Muhammadans in the crowd who appeared adverse to the acceptance of the terms offered, and, doubtless, many of them were acting at the instigation of the Tumonggong's party, who by no means relished so peaceful a solution of the difficulties their chief's action had brought about.
