Furze liked to sit so near the window that she could peep out at the edge of the blind when she was not dozing. It is true no master nor mistress ever stirred at that hour, but every now and then a maidservant could be seen, and she was better than nothing for the purpose of criticism.
I prefer to visit those houses whose door service is performed by a neat, good-looking, intelligent, bright-witted, kindly-tempered, conscientious, and sympathetic maidservant. A man is generally very unsatisfactory. He performs his duty in a perfunctory manner. His heart is not in it.
But a small accident, which happened about this time, determined him in my favour. This was no other than the pregnancy of his maidservant, who declared her situation to me, assuring me at the same time that I was the occasion of it.
A maidservant answered the caller's knock, and showing her into a chamber furnished like a parlor which had started out to be a reception room and then had tried too late to change back again into a parlor, bade her wait. She did not have long to wait.
The old woman stayed no longer, and went back to the gazelle, followed secretly by the mistress, who called a maidservant and bade her take some milk and rice and cook it for the gazelle. 'Take also this cloth, she said, 'to cover it with, and this pillow for its head. And if the gazelle wants more, let it ask me, and not its master.
"With the one who has written the most," said I, because I did not know, at that time, which of them had most interested himself in the M rchen. "Jacob is the most learned," said the maidservant. "Well, then, take me to him." I entered the room, and Jacob Grimm, with his knowing and strongly- marked countenance, stood before me.
All the faces in the street were in the windows; the little maidservant flew to the wicket-gate; the Mesdames Clapp looked out from the casement of the ornamented kitchen; Emmy, in a great flutter, was in the passage among the hats and coats; and old Sedley in the parlour inside, shaking all over.
From whom should they first learn it? Should it be with every accompaniment of coarseness, of levity, of obscenity? From some ribald groom in the stables? From some impure maidservant who has stolen into the household and the nursery? From some brother only a year or two older, who has just received his first initiation in impurity at a private school and is too young to understand its danger?
All the while there could be heard the characteristic, imperious voice of one Crich woman or another calling 'Helen, come here a minute, 'Marjory, I want you here. 'Oh, I say, Mrs Witham . There was a great rustling of skirts, swift glimpses of smartly-dressed women, a child danced through the hall and back again, a maidservant came and went hurriedly.
Over the mantelpiece there was a pencil drawing by Domenichino, of the Madonna and Child; a certain ecstatic languor in the Madonna, and, in all the lines of form and drapery, an exquisite flow and roundness. The little maidservant brought in the afternoon letters and with them a folded newspaper the Markborough Post.
